Preventative Strategies to Delay Arthritis

David: Hi, my name is David from New Orleans, Louisiana. What are some affect or strategies for delaying the onset of arthritis?

Dr. Mary Wasko: David I’m happy you ask about—strategies for arthritis because all too often we’re trying to help patients who’ve already had and established diagnosis of arthritis and prevention is certainly a better strategy id you have the opportunity. For patients who are obese, those people in particular at higher risk for developing osteoarthritis or degenerative arthritis of the knees. Weight loss is obviously one way in which the risk for knee osteoarthritis could be minimized.

Another predisposing factor for developing arthritis or another reason why one might develop arthritis is that because of some injury to a specific joint. Once the parts have become damaged, they don’t tend to work in a normal fashion and over time arthritis can develop with changes in the cartilage and the bone and the joint. In the event, you develop an injury or sustain an injury it would be important to go through a rehabilitative program to keep the muscles around the joint as strong as possible to help minimize any further injury to that joint.
