Female Speaker: If your heart health isn't exactly up to par, make the choice to get back on track. Simple lifestyle changes can make a huge impact on your overall heart health.
Dr. Edward J. Roccella: There are few other lifestyle changes that people can make to prevent hypertension and cardiovascular disease. Number one, for heaven's sake as well as your own don't smoke. I have got nothing good to say about smoking. Two, if one chooses to drink, do so in moderation. The general recommendations are no more than two drinks a day for men and one for women, and that's because women metabolize alcohol faster than men. So do so in moderation if you choose to drink. A diet rich in fresh fruits and vegetables has been shown to reduce arterial blood pressure. It's called the DASH diet and it stands for Dietary Approaches to Stop Hypertension. The DASH diet showed an 8-14 mm drop in blood pressure after just two weeks. That's as good as to drugs.
So there are lots of lifestyle choices that people can make. Women especially should be aware about their elevated blood pressure. As all of us, men and women get older, there's progressive rise in arterial pressure, but that doesn't necessarily have to be so. We can prevent the progressive rise in blood pressure with some lifestyle changes; diet, cutting back on salt, reading food labels, just making some wise choices. So fitness matters, walking 30 minutes a day.

Washington D.C. newscaster and Sister to Sister supporter Maureen Bunyan discusses the benefits of health fairs.
Maureen Bunyan: We have the folks who do exercise, coming into the sharing the need for exercise and how that contributes to wellness and heart health.
Alease Morrow: I was listening to the doctor that spoke and he was explaining why fitness is important. I do agree with that and I try to have a lifestyle that includes fitness and the results our good news, and it shows that I am making an effort to do it because they are really good results.
Maureen Bunyan: Women are social animals and I have talked to women who have come over and over, every year, they come and they say I'll bring my girlfriends, we come and we get our cholesterol checked and our blood pressure and we pick up all the latest brochures and we find out about the latest diet. It provides a way for women to network and to provide a reinforcement to each other. That's what this does and it's a life saving thing.
