Protective Gear for Beach Volleyball
Host: All right, I'm back with Canada’s Olympic bronze medal winners, John Child and Mark Heese and they’re going to show me what I need to get ready to play some ball while facing the elements. Now, I imagine that sun is a big factor.
Mark Heese: It’s a huge factor and because of that, we have to put something on your head to protect your eyes, your skin, your face. So, I'm known for wearing a visor. John’s known for wearing a hat. So, I’ll give you choice, we have a visor or a hat.
Host: Who do I offend? I’ll take the hat since you got it in your hand.
Mark Heese: All right, I got it in my hand.
Host: All right, oh, comfortable!
Mark Heese: There you go. You like that?
Host: Nice! Really nice!
Mark Heese: There we go.
Host: Okay, now what about eye wear because, of course, you got to protect your eyes from the sun but don’t you guys have to deal with the sun being in your eyes when you’re on either side of the volleyball court?
John Child: Yeah, you do and there’s actually a different lenses for different kind of conditions, too. Somebody wear, when it’s a little darker out and maybe the sun’s at your back and others you wear when you're looking into the sun so kindly try that pair.
Host: And you guys, of course, switch styles.
John Child: That’s just the style thing, right so that matches what you're wearing right. Nice!
Host: Right.
Mark Heese: That’s all a part of it.
Host: Of course. You switch sides after a certain number of points.
John Child: Every five points, we switch that.
Host: To keep it fair.
John Child: Yeah, to keep it fair.
Host: Okay and this keeps the sand out of the eyes, too?
John Child: Keeps the sand out of the eyes.
Host: Perfect! Okay, now what about sunscreen because you are out in the sun, I can imagine.
Mark Heese: Well, yup. Our eyes are protected. We need to protect the skin now and we go through bottles of these in any given season so we have to put some of these one.
Host: Now?
Mark Heese: Give me your --
Host: Okay.
Mark Heese: These studio are pretty bright.
Host: Oh, I don’t if they have UV but good enough.
Mark Heese: Oh, a little bit too much there.
Host: Oh, my gosh!
John Child: You better rub that off.
Host: All right, better get started now. Easy there, that’s a family joke. All right, so now, there’s definite cool factor to beach volleyball and I'm feeling it. Do I look cool? I don’t know. Don’t go away. Sweat will be right back.
