Hey! This is Alex and welcome to 10publicspeakingtips.com. Today's lesson is all about taking you watch off when you give a talk. When you are giving a presentation or seminar or intro talk take your watch off. The worst thing is seeing speaker on stage and constantly looking at his watch or her watch and looking at it and you are freaking out about time.
When you practice your seminar, we always talk. We always think, well, I am giving talk and it's 30 minutes long. The thing is when you are nervous, you normally talk faster. So you will find that you will probably finish your seminar maybe about 5-10 minutes before you I had a schedule. So you be freaking out thinking, "Oh, my God! I have got to fill this gap".
When you give a talk, talk slower and take off you are watch. Maybe get a clock or maybe put the watch somewhere, maybe on the podium or something if you have a podium or maybe give spot someone in your audience, maybe a friend or your to like to give you like a signal where you are running out of time or where half way through your presentation they will give you like a secret signal.
Another good point before I go is that people don't mind going over the time. If you are a good speaker and it's an engaging talk, people will actually listen to you and they will appreciate you going over the time, because your time is more important then theirs. You are the one giving the seminar, you are the expert here, you are the one who has the content. So if it's a insightful content and you are gauging interest for an eye contact and people enjoying your presentation, don't feel -- don't crank it. Don't feel as those overwhelm because you are going over the time.
One thing that I give when I give presentations, I say, listen guys, usually I don't do this, but for this time only I am going over the time. I hope you don't mind that. I get nods thinking, yeah, that's cool, because my time is a important. My time has a certain value on it. It's a good tip. My name is Alex Brian.
