Jennifer Matthews: Jeff Campbell doesn't take time with his wife Julie and daughter Katelyn for granted. Jeff is in remission from stage four colon cancer that spread to his liver.
Jeff Campbell: All of the doctors said I would never see 100% remission. None of the doctors were very positive as far as my outlook.
Jennifer Matthews: In fact, stage four colon cancer has a mere 8% survival rate, especially when it spreads to the liver.
Mark Roh: Up to 60% of patients with colon cancer will develop the disease within their liver at one time or another.
Jennifer Matthews: With standard chemotherapy, drugs travel through the entire body. Just 25% of the drug makes it to the liver. Doctors treated Jeff with a pump that sends chemo directly into the liver.
Mark Roh: All 100% of that drug will be seen by the tumor in the liver.
Jennifer Matthews: The pump is implanted into the abdomen, and it is powered by body heat, it pumping cancer-killing drugs into the liver 24/7 and can stay in for months or years at a time. A recent study shows it significantly increases survival over standard chemotherapy.
Mark Roh: If we didn't have this opportunity for him, I don't think he would have survived. I mean, it saved his life.
Jennifer Matthews: Nine years later, Jeff is still in remission.
Jeff Campbell: I think I'm going to live a normal life just like everybody els. What am I looking forward to? Tomorrow.
Jennifer Matthews: He also looks forward to holding his new son who is already well on his way. This is Jennifer Matthews reporting.
