In this next video lesson, we’re going to play through some punk drum beats. Take a look at beat number one on the provided sheet music. You can see it’s a straight quarter note group. Now if you play this group at a slower tempo, it might sound a little bit funny but play at the speed and with the hi-hat’s open, it actually sounds quite full. I’m going to demonstrate it for you now.
[Demonstration]
Number two builds on the first group. Take a look at the sheet music now. You can see I have the base drum on the one and the end, and then on the three and the end. Now my hi-hat is still doing a quarter note fill. I’m leaving it a little bit open to fill in all the gaps. Let me play it for you now.
[Demonstration]
Beat number three, we move to an eighth note fill. This is similar to the eighth note beats we did earlier except we’re going to be playing it at a faster tempo.
[Demonstration]
In beat number four, we’re going to move off the hi-hat down to the floor tom with our right hand and we’re going to be inserting a hi-tom on the “A” of two. My base drum will be played on all four counts.
[Demonstration]
Number five is a fun one. We move back to a quarter note fill on the hi-hat’s. We’re going to leave them open a little bit too to fill in all that space. Now, take a look at the provided sheet music and you can see on the end and the “A” of three. I got two quick base drum strokes. These are going to be a little tough at first to play up the speed but once you get them, they sound great.
[Demonstration]
Beat number six builds on beat number five. Again, we have the quarter note hi-hat seal and then we’re just adding in a few extra base drum strokes. Let me play it for you now.
[Demonstration]
Now all these punk drum beats can be really fun. Just make sure that you don’t push it too fast and too soon. I’ve seen a lot of drummers into their right arm or the right leg by trying to play and push it too fast. Just take it slow and they’ll all come within time.
