Punk Drum Beats | Drum Lessons
In this next video lesson, we’re gonna play through some punk drum beats. Take a look at beat number one on the provided sheet music. You can see it’s a straight quarter note groove. Now, if you play this groove at a slower tempo, it might sound a little bit funny, but played up to speed, and with the high hats open, it actually sounds quite full. I’m gonna demonstrate it for you now. Number two, builds on the first groove, take a look at the sheet music now. You can see I have the bass drum on the one and the and and then on the three and the and. Now my high hat is still doing a quarter note fill, I’m leaving it a little bit open to fill in all the gaps. Let me play it for you now. Beat number three will move to an 8th note fill. This is similar to the 8th note beats we did earlier, except we’re gonna be playing it at a faster tempo. In beat number four, we’re gonna move off the high hat down to the floor tom with our right hand, and I’m gonna be inserting a high tom on the A of two. My bass drum will be played on all four counts. Number five is a fun one, we move back to a quarter note fill on the high hats. We’re gonna leave them open a little bit to, to fill in all that space. Now, take a look at the provided sheet music, you can see on the and and the A of three, I got two quick bass drum strokes. These are gonna be a little tough at first to play up to speed. But once you get them, they sound great. Beat number six builds on beat number five, again we have the quarter note high hat fill, and then we’re just adding in a few extra bass drum strokes. Let me play it for you now. Now all these punk drum beats can be really fun. Just make sure that you don’t push it too fast, too soon. I’ve seen a lot of drummers injure their right arm or their right leg by trying to play and pushed it too fast. Just take it slow and it will all come within time.
