Shalom! Rabbi Jonathan Ginsburg. These series will be a hundred questions you should know. I am going to ask the question plus give me a chance to answer. The first have to do with the bible.
1. What is the name of the Hebrew bible? The name is Tanaf.
2. What is Tanaf stand for? The “Ta” stands for Torah. The “noem” stands for niveing in prophets, and the Khav stands for to vim, writings, the file sections. That 39 books only Hebrew bible, the Tanaf.
3. What is Zedra or Parsha? The Torah is divided into 54 sections. Each one is a Zedra or Parsha.
4. What is the half Torah? Well, that is the prophetic section that follows the Torah reading on Shebadan holidays. We actually were not really sure why we have one. Some speculate that at some point about 2000 years ago, a Roman Emperor forbid us from reading Torah but not the rest of the Tanaf.
And so in the Naf part in the prophets, the Rabbi is look for a section that would be relevant to the Torah Purish and we can only pick the section from a prophets, the middle section. The vim and that is how we got of Torah. Eventually that idik was lifted so we can read Torah again.
5. What is the Hebrew name for the bible and written Jews now for into have it Old Testament?
Well of course it is Tanaf. We all called your Old Testament because Christians believe that this Old Testament and they have they New Testament. We believe this only one Testament, so we do not call the Old Testament.
They are some differences between them, the Old Testament book arrange a little bit differently that first 5 are the same. But they put Ruth around Judges and they hand the book with Malakai. We of course and Malakai as this middle section of the prophets.
6. What are the names of the 5 books of Moses? Well in English you could remember at this way. Good Eaters Leave No Deserve. G for Genesis, E for Exodus, L for the Leviticus, N for Numbers and D for Deuteronomy. In Hebrew it is Bereshit Shemot Wayyiqra, Bemidbar, Debarim.
7. And what do we believed took place as Sinai? Well, the orthodox believed that wall of the Torah except maybe less the verses or at least the 10 commandments will give at Sinai and the rest of the Torah was given on the 40 years.
As I have explained in my video in Hebrew bible, not orthodox Jews do not believe that that exactly occurred in that fashion. It was written actually over many hundred of years by many people.
Next question on the bible. Why was King David’s reign considered such on important episode in Jewish history? And about it, when was it?
We believe the established the city of Jerusalem in 995. The main reason it was so important. Unified, expanded the nation and all kind of conquest and there was the significant period of King David. The most important part though is that Jewish tradition believes that the Messiah comes from King David.
Next question, who are they early Kings of the Israel? And why was the country later partition in the Israel and Judah?
Well, the first King was Saul, second King was David, and third King was Solomon. After Solomon died, the kingdom within the two, the 10 Northern Tribes in the North called Israel, and the two southern Tribes called Judah were Jerusalem was.
They split because it was a loose coalition all along and it is the power of the Kings, early Kings that really held it together. And then the book Kings 1 and 2, it traces the history of the Kings in both Kingdoms, until the 10 tribes in the North of the Israel was lost for 722 by the Assyrians.
Next question, to find a prophet, name three important prophets? Rather are back prophets in the Torah, Miriam is called a prophet, Moses is called a prophet. Nathan is called a prophet in the time of King David. Samuel is called the prophet. The little right prophet is know there are 15 that is Isaiah, Jeremiah and Ezekiel are the big three because the size of their books.
I mean they are 12 small ones. There a wonderfully important to ones Amus, Hosiah, Zachariah, Nahum, Habakuk, Malachi, etc. So those are the prophets.
Prophecy is tough to define. Where are those who believe it simply a divine gift. Others believe that you can spiritually tune yourself to be able receives special messages with God. In Number 12 it says that God alone speaks to Moses mouth to mouth word for word. Everyone else will receive God word got in dreams in visions.
Prophets will not literal tape recordings of God’s word but rather who fraphted though the prophets themselves. And I think the beautiful book to read about this Abraham, Joshua prophets.
And then finally in this section, what is the Tomad? Why is it called the oil tradition?
You can see my video alone Tomad 101. Basically the Tomad is the compilation of the oil law at stayed alone to 220. when it was written down in called the Mishnah and then the Mishnah was discussed for couple of hundred years both in Palestine and in Babylonia and those Tomads, those recording, the gumarahs eventually combined Mishnah equal to Tomads.
Let us concludes the first video on the Jewish literacy of a hundred questions Jews should ask. We will continue next with issues about the Synagogue and the prayer book.
