Ori Hoffer: Hi we are talking with Jay Nolly, he is one of the goal keepers here for Real Salt Lake and we are going to be talking about what it takes to be a goalie and some of the things that you have to do to be successful. We are going to start of with the way they really catch the ball and so that you can catch it cleanly. Jay what are some of the things that people should be doing if they are a goal keeper?
Jay Nolly: Well mainly the first thing you want to start of is your body position. You know the goal keeping -- it is your feet that's going to get your hand to the ball, so in our position we want to be forward, hands out, so we can shoot, and step to the ball. And then the next part with catching keeping your body behind the ball. So if the ball is coming to the side we want to step to the side so we can catch it because if we drop it or it goes through our hands we want it our body instead of go straight through our hands in to the goal.
Ori Hoffer: Okay and, obviously, goalies are the one player on the player that are allowed to use there hands so what are some of the -- what do you have to do with your hands to make sure that you can catch the ball cleanly?
Jay Nolly: Well definitely with high balls up and around here you would want to have your hands either in diamond or a 'W' is what we usually teach. But we want to keep them on top because if a ball that is coming with a lot of velocity we want to be able to knock it straight down instead of knock it back towards the forwards. So my hands are on top, I am kind of in a 'W', so if he would have hit that ball real hard I can knock it straight down and catch it or I can just straight catch it like this and then we want to bring it in, so that it does not get knocked out by any forward.
So my hands are on top kind of in a "W" or a diamond, so if that ball is not coming through to me here, so I can knock it down or just hold on to it and bring it in. With balls that are coming in like this you still want to try and get as much overtop of it, but those are really stretching out up for, so that is when you kind of coming around, but the big things is your feet and your body. If you are catching a ball that is coming from this angle you want to bring this leg up because this is going to be your protection against any forwards that come in.
So when I am coming for a ball I want to drive this leg up because it will be my protection and you shoot your hands to catch the ball at its highest point because I have got another three feet on the forward. So I want to get up there above their head.
So I had my protection come up, I catch the ball way up here, so no one can head it, and then once I come down I bring it in because no one is going to get this ball out. And the big thing too is moving your feet. You want to be light on your toes, you do not want to be on your heels, you want to be on your toes so you can move side to side, back, and up; big things, the feet that gets your hand to ball.
