Ori Hoffer: Alright, we are talking with Jay Nolly; he is one of the goal keepers here for Real Salt Lake and we are going to be talking about what it takes to be a goalie and some of the things that you have to do to be successful. Now sometimes the ball is coming is too fast too hard and you just cannot get your hand behind it you just have to get out of there and that is when you bring out the big fist, talk about punching the ball.
Jay Nolly: Punching the ball; there are a couple of different ways for punching the ball. Just on a straight shot that is coming in to you, sometimes you are just not going to be able to hang on to it. So the big thing is making sure you punch it wide, you do not want to knock it straight back out into the forwards, you want to try and be able to knock it wide.
So it is keeping your body behind the ball, so that you can knock it out to the corners because that will give you a better angle for your next shot. You want to prepare yourself for the next shot and also if punching is corners, if there is a whole mess of people in here there is one hand punch and when it is coming from that direction we want to be able to punch it back out that direction. So keep the ball where it is going because it is going to a lot harder if I am coming this way to punch it that way because I am not going to get it outside 18.
Ori Hoffer: What do you have to make sure you do not break anything in your hands?
Jay Nolly: You just got to be tough, you know, there is no rules against breaking your hands punching the ball. It is just another goal keeping thing that you have got to be tough.
If the ball is coming in the air and I start running out and I know there might be a collision, then that is when I am going to want to punch because I do not want to try and catch the ball, if I am going to get it hit around with my arms it could get knocked and also wet, you know, whether. You do not want to be catching a wet ball with wet gloves it is a lot tougher. So just punching it out, it is just like a head out, you know, when a defender heads a ball it is just the safer bet, you know, because you do not want to drop the ball right in front of a forward.
Well we want to get away from is swinging at the ball because when we are -- it is a lot harder to swing at a ball than it is to just to jab at it because if you throw the ball up and I can just keep my eyes and jab at it but if he throws the ball up and I swing at it is going to be a lot harder to make contact with that ball because my arms are swinging. So when the ball is up in the air we just want to jab at it.
So he is not throwing that ball in too hard and I can pop it almost outside 18, okay. So just make sure it is just a short movement like that. With the one handed punch we want to make sure that we do not punch it back this way. We are going to make sure that we keep the ball go into the opposite direction. I may want to keep that ball going that way because most of the traffic is going to be out in here, and I do not want to be coming back that way and punch it back to him because he will just shoot it in the goal. So if I am this way I want to keep that ball going that way and get it all the way out so my defense can step up.
