This review of Radio Flare is brought to you by AppVee.com. Radio Flare is an interesting music based arcade shooter for the iPhone and iPod Touch. While this game does function just like a regular arcade shooter at its core, it does add some additional twists and turns to the mix to create a new experience.
In Radio Flare you control your space ship with one finger while you defend yourself with the other. In most arcade shooters you’d be firing your weapons the entire time. In Radio Flare, you’ll be locking on to up to four targets at once by dragging your finger across them. The targets will be desynchronized in time to the beat, adding to the soundtrack of the level you’re playing.
The whole game is based around the music. The music changes as you destroy more ships and collect the radio flares that these ships leave behind. The more radio flares you collect, the more intense the music and the difficulty of the level increases. There are five total levels to play your way through with over 100 enemy formations and 20 unlockable achievements.
The music in Radio Flare does start off kind of slow and doesn’t captivate you until you get halfway through the first level. There also is no way besides dying to exit back to menu. This can be frustrating if you decide you want to switch from the free play Flow mode to Arcade mode or vice versa. Overall, Radio Flare is an enjoyable game. It just feels like the music could have been more interactive with the game.
