You know, mom has been bugging me for months now to get the doors done on her laundry room cabinets, and installed them about a year ago. So, I guess, it is probably time I should finish those up. So, it is what we are going to do today in the wood whisper. We are going to make some raised paneled doors Hot and Fresh Woodworking, The Wood Whisperer. Episode 29: Raising Arizona
Now, as a well-rounded wood worker, you probably, should be comfortable with making a raised paneled door. They fairly come and you are going to see them on all types of cabinetries, especially kitchen cabinets. In this case, we are doing laundry room cabinets to match the rest of the house. So, it very important to know this technique.
But first, let us look at the anatomy of this door. Okay, you have got your horizontal riles and your vertical styles, okay as a terminology. Also, see and referred to as cope and stick joinery in terms of the type of joinery that holds these pieces together. The door itself. We could take this apart here, nothing is glued up. The door itself is the raised panel.
Okay, so it is just the three-quarter inch piece. This happens to be hickory. You could see it is got this nice curve showing the actual raised material here. And then we have a nice tenant essentially. And this is going to allow this panel, all solid wood to float in the grooves that are cut into this piece. Okay, so we can expand and contract safely without having any major wood movement issues later on.
Now, let us take a closer look at the rail and stile pieces and see what we have actually done. Okay, this is one of our rail pieces and this is our vertical style.
Now, not only do they both have a groove cut in it, okay, and that is going to house the end of our panel. We have also got a decorative edge on the inside. All the way around and the one real important piece or joinery here is, the fact that, on the ends of the rails, check that out, there is a little tenon. Okay and the negative of this profile edge here, you could right there, so that when you put these pieces together, hopefully not backwards, okay, like this. We got a perfect fit, right?
Now, there is three bits that I use to make a raised paneled door. You have got a raised paneled bit which I currently, have in the router table. We will look at that later on. And the other two are the rail and the stile bits, these two right here. Now, I have got three other bits because this is a full kitchen cabinet making set. Honestly, I hardly ever even use this other tool.
So, let us take a closer look at the rail and style a bit, that is where things got a little bit confusing for people because they look the same, I mean, really, their positive and negative of each other so that we can get that tight joint in our rail pieces to our stile pieces. So, the one we are going to actually do the most cutting with is our style bit.
Now, I would recommend figuring out which on is which and then do what I did, marked one with an S and on with an R, I think there is an S under there. You see that? Okay, and that make sure that you are going to get this confusing in the future.
Obviously, only one can do the right job for the right piece, but you do not want to find out the hard way and go through it kind of practice pieces just to find that out. Okay, so this is the stile bit. Imagine this is mounted in the router table and here we go with one our style pieces. Okay and we could see how that profile is put.
So, what we actually do is cut the groove for our panel and we have a nice decorative profile cut in our piece at the same time. Now, it is important to realize that this stile bit. Although we refer to it as the stile bit, it is also going to be use to cut that same exact groove and profile on our rail pieces. We need that all the way around on all four pieces.
Now, the rail bit is a little bit different. The only place we are going to use the rail bit is on the ends of the rails, the end grain of the rails. And you could see as you run that over, it would cut its profile into the end like so and then this profile fits perfectly over what we have cut previously with our stile bit. Now, setting up this router bits could seem like the hardest part of the project, but in reality, the most critical part is getting the numbers right from the start.
So, are going over to the laundry room, take some measurements of the cabinets. I am going to show you how, using this set and the properties of this set. Remember, yours might be a little different, so, consult your manual. But, I am going to show you using my set, what the measurements are and how I go from a certain size cabinet to specifically size the door parts.
