Reading the Bible Literal True
Shalom! This video is base on a question I got for Ashley Rabbi seven series, but again the question is a little too long and so I find an answered here. And I also urge you to watch my video on “Did the Exodus really happen, because it has the same time of analysis”. This is a general question, the specific question there was, and did the Exodus happen here is how do we understand the Bible? Is it myth, is it allegory, is it to be taken literally? Those are really the great questions and as that how we would read the book.
And, that there are somebody with different ways to answer these. Unless you are phonetic, a fundamentalist, you do not believe that the bible has written every word that we have today t form God the most the Sinai. And the signs had proven that very clearly literary analysis, the historical analysis, critical analysis, and there are many, many reasons for believing that. Since the middle of the 19th century scholars have believe that the Torah consist of at least four major documents called JEPD that were roving together by redactor and the virtually have today has a added at version. And I suggest read Genesis one and compare it to Genesis two to see the contradictory, analysis different name of God should there and there are hundreds of examples like that.
Okay, so then in the words of Rabbi Abraham, the Torah itself is a Midrash and what happen? The book we have today is the composition of oral narratives that were past off for many centuries and that is why in the story of Joseph and the pig, you can have two different brothers arguing for him remain Judah, why in the story of Noah you can have a difference between whether you have one pair of animals or seven pairs of animals what why three times and a few chapters are patriarch would present our lives as there sisters and contradictions between various books in the book of Deuteronomy.
It is understandable, why that would happen. Now, so what the literary true? First of all we do not take the book of scientific at all. It is unnecessary to read for example Genesis chapter one is science that the rule is created in six days and watch my videos on Brashid in Genesis and creationism to understand. It does not say to science. Look, and it does not say that one day is 24 hours of our time.
So, it is not necessary and he when the son stands still and Joshua who says that is literal. My minorities who he cannot dug his credential, great as rabbi and history at 11:30 to 12:04 said for example when the bible says for example when the bible says that the wolfs are going to lay down with the lamp and the messianic prophesies of Isaiah. It is not to be taken literally. So if my minorities could say if my soul modesties could say that you do not take that literally who are we to say we have to see every single word of the bible literally.
In clearly there are mythological elements. Okay, take the no story. Every culture had a flood story. So it is the guys were not maybe no one certainly, there was not a boat and that at actually existed that way. There was an actually pair of an animals. It is our peoples understanding through filtered, through we believed God, trying to communicate of value to us and the value is God does not want in justice and God says that is specifically in Isaiah and God look down and saw a justice and I wonder why there is no intend Ervin but, this is a mythological story to make that point. And there is really a rainbow and God said this is the sign of the covenant. It is to explain a rainbow and take the passage in Genesis, which is just often over look which says that the sons of the gods married the head deletions with the daughters of man.
That is clearly ancient mythology that is God stack in there and David and Gallia story was a really a giant like that who represent at all so mythological tally. You can read those kinds of towns and may cultures. That I suggest if you want to red many books like that one is called myth legend and custom in the Old Testament to give a sense of how universal some of the stories are.
So, what is a change? I mean there is a kind of simple thinking like a Rabbi who said, when it says in the mythology “God says to Moses saying command the children usually to do like these” either it is true or not true. It is not true to tell things or joke enough to do it. What a very simplistic way. I know that there are plenty of Jews who believe that, but it is much more layered. This text is the holly of text we have. Even if we have nothing to do it God it is still 20 times older than our final rated constitution in United States. It has been sacred document for us. It is the most important document history for thousands of years. It shapes the whole world and then if you into what I believe which is God id behind it. That filled it through this layers of text or the spiritual genius of the old time of Abraham, Moses, and Isaiah, Ezekiel, and Jeremiah, Jamison and, Hagai, Issachar and all this great geniuses filtering Gods word and I do believe that Moses was the greatest prophet of all. That Moses has the closes relationship with God and that Moses took the essence of the Lords that God gave.
And our evidence for that is that the Torah says that hundreds of thousands are millions of people witnessed it. And that tradition is passed on for thousands of years be hard to make that at all and lots of other arguments forward.
So, I know it is not, I wish I could say simply as it is matter. Simply know it is all literally true. It is neither unless you are phonetic or a complete a feis. But it is the most sacred with document or the world. We hold it with high reverence. We believe it was given us by God and series for what for all people understand the complexity of the issue and high discern, what I literally true and what is myth and what is allegory what is metaphor, then what was tourist studied about? That is why we have such a layer, to approach and there are some fantastic resources out there. My videos are clearly not the meant the scholarship. There three minutes explaining a very complicated subject.
That is why a Rabbi Study all at time and Jews study to try and understand how to apply this and how do Jewish people should go forward.
