Jennifer DiDonato: Hello welcome to MadeFit TV. I’m your host Jennifer DiDonato and this is episode number 49, that’s right it going to be 50 next week, so I’m very excited. So thanks so much for joining us, I couldn’t have done this without you and in case you are just new to MadeFit TV, we are everyone source for health and fitness information and entertainment.
So today it’s going to be something that is I’m going to be actually referring to lot of the viewers out there, I get lot of the your email of course as you know when I get lot of questions as to why certain things are going your way at the gym with your help and fitness program. You know if you are sticking with it since the New Year, I cant believe, I am still talking about the New Year, its not the New Year anymore it’s May but getting through all those months and maybe you’re still not seeing those results even after you set that goal of this is going to be the year 2009 that I’m going to do it and may be you are not really seeing anything so today is going to be our top 10 reasons, why you’re not loosing weight and this is in no particular order these are just certain things that may be you can benefit from or may be certain things you haven’t thought of that could be affecting your program.
So to get started, we are going to start at number 1 I guess we are not going, what is that? We will go 10, start at 10 go to 1, because there is no particular order this is not one that’s may be better than the other. So alright starting at number 10 you are going to keep me on that though I’m get confused.
Number 10, you could be eating too much, you’re eating too much and when I say that, that is because when you are exercising and you are thinking like, oh! Yeah I’m hitting the gym may be three days a week, you know when you are reading the treadmills, its telling you that you have burnt 400 or 500, 300 calories. You’re thinking, oh hey then I can eat that much more that I burned at the gym but a lot of times it’s not the case. Calories in calories out there are some conflicting reports on that as to if that is true or not but based on an overall weight loss program you want to make sure that you having a little bit more calorie expenditure than you’re actually getting in that you are actually taking in.
So you could be eating too much. Perfect example 2 is may be with the gym that you are working out in, you’re working out with your friends and the instructors like, okay go downstairs you get protein shake, I want you to get this food in then I want you to get you know two shakes of protein Blah, blah, blah all of a sudden you are looking that like a 600 calorie shake its like wow, wow, wow wait a minute, you know your body need those nutrients to restore, replenish and refuel but I doubt you need that much may be you will if you are a huge body builder and you weigh may be 300 pounds but if you are the typical 150 pound women may be 35-years-old that 600 calorie shake could be putting you back even though its healthy you are overeating very too much, so want to watch that and make sure that you are kind of keeping a close eye at how much you are really burning and how much you are eating because this is not an excuse to just eat whatever you want.
Taking it to number 9, the top nine reasons or the number 9 reason why you may not be loosing weight could be that you are eating too healthy; people think that pyramid that the government gives us that you need to eat so gosh I can’t remember. You got the dairy, you got the meat, you got the grains, you got the fruits, you got the vegetables. Typically the government recommends you between 2 to 4 servings of fruit but what you are not, what you may not realize is that a serving would be like cup.
So one cup of like what say peaches for instance, if you have a can of peaches a one serving could be a three servings that can contains three servings in there so you have to watch that you may think all that whole can is one serving and fruits good and its got sugar, I am eating healthy but really you could be overeating those healthy foods because remember fruit still contains a lot of sugar, still contains a lot of carbohydrate so you can eat it but you just make sure you are still eating at moderation, you know, if you are eating three bananas in one day, may be you want to take it down to one or you know have a banana in the morning and then may be have an apple in the afternoon but try not to exceed between 2 and 4 of that fruit.
And the same thing goes for those healthy carbohydrates, the healthy whole grains, that’s good you are eating but remember just because its healthy doesn’t mean you can eat a bunch of it because whatever you body doesn’t use you are going to store as fat because your body wants to store to be used for later but if you are not going to be burning all those calories later it just going to store, so remember eat healthy but don’t need too much, alright.
Number 8 reason why you may not be loosing weight you deprived yourself, a lot of times we say that’s it no more chocolate cakes rest of my life but then when you are going into these restaurants you are going to graduation parties which are going to be a ton this summer or weddings you are going to see that cake and you are going just feel like I can have it.
I told myself I can have it and then you go and try and you think like oh my god I am such a fat but, I’m just terrible, I gave up, I am terrible I cant follow to do with anything and you just say to yourself you are a failure and you don’t want that you guys and if you truly cant have that you know if you cant stick to that then don’t put yourself in that position because you really don’t want to say you suffer for failure and its okay in moderation may be once a month allow yourself to have a piece of chocolate cake or once a month allow yourself to go to the ice cream store and get something because I know that if you feel like depriving yourself you don’t feel like you human, if you feel like I am only the person who is doing this.
But something that you really, really enjoy really like let yourself habit common just make sure that you are still leading healthy lifestyle and eating healthy to maintain that.
Number 7 reason why you may not be loosing weight you given to others, how many times have you been in some place and order say when once like told she is John usually have pizza all the time you come here. Well I am going to eat healthy and I am just going to eat salad, oh come on, come on eat this pizza. And its like when you are constantly giving in like that all of a sudden you find yourself basically getting into peer pressure and you are allowing people to manipulate your choice of leading a healthy lifestyle and I am not saying you cant have pizza, you know going to back to what I was saying earlier about but not depriving yourself but if you are making an effort to better your health and may be you have 35 pounds to loose you got that big got that you must bring it down, your blood pressure is too high and your doctor is saying you cholesterol is too high you don’t want to be taking medication for that stuff you can control it right.
So it’s time to take action and you don’t want others to interfere with your decisions because its your life, you are the one is in control that’s putting in your body and so if you don’t want to eat that, don’t let others make you feel bad about it and the same thing goes for in the gym. If you are giving into others, if someone is may be pushing you if your friend is pushing you too hard like Oh! Come on, I can lift this 100 pounds you can lift it too and lets see you are not really conditioned to lift that, don’t do it because you may injure yourself.
So don’t give into what others say, listen to your body and follow the guidelines that you set for yourself and that you know is going to work for you and not for anyone else but yourself though understand, though get over it and honestly they are going to be quite envious of you when you start looking better and then they are going to want to do the same things so you are actually setting a really good example for your friends and for your family and the people around you for living a healthy life.
Number 6 reason why you may not be loosing weight you are not being realistic, you are looking at what others are doing. Let’s say you are setting a goal, I want to loose 50 pounds by July. Well that’s great but in a few weeks and you may not be able to get that and I know with watching televisions and seeing those shows like the biggest looser or bulging brides all those other shows you are seeing them, loosing a significant amount of inches, significant amount of weight but understand that these people that’s all they are doing all day and that’s stakes are high the stakes are right there. You have your reputation on the line, you are on the television of course you are going to do well because everyone can see you, everyone that you love, everyone you hate sees you, you know you want to impress those people right. You got money on the line, you do want to come out looking like all of us want to entered this competition and lose 5 pounds so of course you are going to be pushing a limit on that but in realistically talking you know we have jobs, we have other lives our lives don’t revolve around that.
See you want to set your goal and be realistic so the tip that I always give people is to make sure that lets say you do have that 50 pound weight loss goal but instead lets make a goal of loosing one or two pounds a week then that way you are biting off those small pieces and then in the long run you eventually reach that goal, so just focusing on those small goals every week may be weighing in on that Saturday and if you didn’t loose the weight for that week you know that you can pick it up the next week because its going to take you eventually that goal those small things add up so be realistic and just take your time and you are going to get there.
Number 5 reason why you may not be loosing weight is you believe everything, you read, okay since when, okay for instance we go to school, we went to school when we are little. Okay, since when did we listen to what the science books said or this or that, okay we are just studying that up and taking a test but how come, we should be listening too right because these professionals who wrote these things but then yet we give into these magazines and we given to these ads and we given to these stupid claims written on a package of your food, why we are not listening to the professionals and why we are listening to the garbage that’s being shutdown on our throats make a still bad about ourselves.
So don’t believe everything you read people. If you are buying something at the store and you see that it says Oh! A third less fat, will guess what, read it little closely its got small print written to that bold font number 20, third less fat and this says write in the font number 10 then they leaving health food bar. So really its not healthier version of that or its not your favorite bar but now it’s a third less fat. It’s comparing it to something else so like you know like Checksmix. Checksmix it’s a favorite snack was it you got 60% less fat. The potato chips, Checksmix refer that come on turn it light, so yes it's got 60% less fat or whatever in the potato chips but eating a crap lot of Checksmix is not going to make you thin you may also picking those potato chips. Now I’m saying so don’t read everything, don’t believe everything you read like look at it from a perspective where what are they trying to say and nutrition facts and don’t tell, yeah can have lot of the nutrition fats and don’t take it literally, they are trying to get you to buy that things so there are going to pull whatever its sounds like on there.
They are not lying to you but they are being very misleading. So don’t believe everything you read, same thing with magazines you know you get confused, hey one thing is saying do this wonders that’s going to make loose weight, no don’t do wonders this is going to make you fat and gaining muscle stick to something that you stick to the truth. Don’t give into fats and don’t give in to things that are just going to end up leading you down. Be realistic.
Number 4 reason why you may not be loosing weight, you don’t challenge yourself enough, wake up, okay congratulations you are walking for an hour a week but you know what that can only last so long because your body is not going to change unless you challenge it.
For those women out there I know that you don’t want to bulk up but if you are just using those 5 pound weights and swinging them like this guess what that’s no different than putting weight to dishes or picking up laundry because the laundry basket definitely weighs more than 5 pounds, right or men do laundry too, that laundry basket weighs more than 5 or 10 pounds.
So why the heck are you designating that precious hour of your time going to the gym lifting up lumpy weights challenge yourself, you must challenge yourself you guys, you got a shock you by shock the system because if you are not challenging your muscles or your heart with cardio higher than you would just walking around your house or just picking up something that wont makes you think that just because you are at the gym that’s going to magically turn your body into a fit buff tone machine, you must challenge yourself and it may suck for the first five minutes but if you start out that way you are going to find that 5 mins is going to turn into 30 minutes and you are going to thinking now what I can go another 10 minutes, good for you because you are already there, you are already pushing yourself and that’s the only weight your body is going to be forced to change.
So definitely challenge yourself otherwise you’re wasting your time. I mean its good to be active and I am not saying that if you are not changing yourself, you are wasting your time you still burning calories that you are going to stay at plateau and if you are staying at a plateau and you are fine with that, that all means do that but for the people that are looking to loose their weight and see those changes into tone up and firm up, you must keep challenging yourself because your body is going to progress and its going to change so then you are going have to progress with it. So challenge yourself you guys got to remember that.
Number 3 reason why you may not be loosing weight, you are giving up too soon. You are giving up. I know that it’s really, really cool when you get into that mould where it’s like alright finally it clicked I’m going to start working out, I’m start eating healthy. I’m going to start staying after work and just jogging around the building a few times before I go home. But if you are biting off, if you are starting out like that. biting of too much you can chew kind of then you are going to find you may fall off and you are not and you think I’m noting seeing results you only giving at may be month and then you like out I’m not seeing any results this is just a waste and then you go back to eating the potato chips and you know just not even paying attention what you are doing, don’t give up it is proven that your body needs at least 8 to 12 weeks to start seeing those quantitative challenges.
Those quantitate changes, those changes the numbers and the pants fitting you differently you must give yourself that time at least three months to start seeing those changes because like I said earlier your body is going to maintain what’s used to if you don’t challenge it and so you must go through those changes and be following through with it and being consistent because that’s the only way you are going to see change, don’t give up so soon just keep add that you are going to see the changes.
And the number 2 reason why you may not be loosing weight is that your program is very too boring. Are you still doing that’s step stuff that you are doing 1985, yeah that’s right and then you like well I’m not even wounded you have been doing the same workout for the past 20 years. Okay, its time to mix it up like I said your body is going to change so now you have to change your program to mix it up and challenge yourself because if you are just doing the same thing all the time your body is eventually get hit that plateau so switch it up may be you have lifted weights your whole life and you are not really seeing the changes any more. Well may be try some yoga or may be try some Pilates or may be try some circuit style training.
Switch it up because depending on your body’s height you may find that the type of training you have been doing for that many years, may not been the best one that your body reacted to, whether your body change too. So switch it up, just keep it open mind, go with your friends if they have been bugging you to go to a swimming class just go, I mean with my fiance he wanted me to play sports more often because I’m always lifting weights. Its like a gym junky and its like finally I’m kind of getting out there I’m playing a racquet ball, I’m doing the more things as they call you know this is kind of fun and get my career win and I don’t have to think about it, so its something different and stoning up the different areas differently than what I would have just lifting weights. So try not to keep such a boring workout schedule just mix it up little bit.
Alright, and the number one reason why you may not be losing weight is that you are not consistent, same thing goes as not giving up, consistency is key I tell everybody that’s and this goes for nutrition, this goes for cardio, this goes for string training, this goes for your mind set, this goes for everything that could possibly affect yours fitness program, your fitness health program, nutrition program being consistent because if you are not consistent you are just going to be chasing your tail. What I mean by being consistent is make a pack with yourself, set that goal and follow through with it.
If you are having a week where you just can get to the gym or you are injured that it doesn’t mean that just because you can’t workout that means you can throw your nutrition out the window, you sick with the healthy nutrition to balance it out. This is the lifestyle change you guys this is not, oh! I am going to loose 20 pounds and I’m just going to start doing what I was doing before and still say stayed at 20 pounds is guess what the 20 pounds going to come back, its going to creep back slowly. That’s what you want to be consistent and make it your lifestyle and try not to let certain things completely tear you down, because life happens that’s just a way it is. Our lives don’t revolve around being at the gym or exercising so that’s why you have to be consistent with those healthy habits to see those results.
So those are your top reasons why you may not be loosing weight and I hope that a lot of you, it kind of spark something in you that things or may be I should be doing this or that or the other thing.
