Female: Dr. Lepisto, are women are more susceptible to Candida yeast infection?
Dr. Lepisto: Good question and yes they are and the reason for that is that the candida likes a very moist and warm climate.
Female: Climate—exactly.
Dr. Lepisto: --in which to live and so obviously women have a vaginal area that’s moist and warm and they’re more readily able to develop a yeast infection there. Of course for man, it could be under skin folds also but it’s because it's’ more common in the female for that reason.
Female: So that’s the reason, okay.
Dr. Lepisto: Yes.
Female: How do antibiotics affect women in yeast infections, is that—
Dr. Lepisto: Right
Female: Can cause more problems?
Dr. Lepisto: Yes.
Female: More frequency?
Dr. Lepisto: Yes, and it does and especially chronic antibiotic use because it’s eliminating the natural microflora found in the digestive tract. There is an association between woman who have an antibiotic history and a vaginal yeast infection we also know that women who have vaginal yeast infections always have an intestinal reservoir Candida.
Female: Well thank you Dr. Lepisto.
