Thank you Tania.
Now, what are some of the job must have? If you’re going to create jobs, the generation Y, beyond of 30’s are going to be productive in and stick with, what are the key elements that they would find in those? Firstly, recognize that the young travel in packs. Now, anyone who has children is well aware of this and I’m sure those who don’t just look around town and just see how they all get together regularly. The young travel in packs. So they’ve grown up this way.
When I was young, we would go to a party and we would turn up on our own, never, not now. My daughter in particular—the girls are probably more extreme on this, but virtually every Saturday night, we have five or six girls at our house getting changed and they spend an hour and a half to our house doing this. It’s probably they have more fun getting ready, I believe than actually going out and going to a party. So they travel in packs. It’s what they expect. It’s what they enjoy.
Now, why is that? There is a number of forces that have shape it, some fairly obvious ones? Firstly, family sizes are smaller. Typically, we don’t know why name is very well, typically people in our society now, moving to a neighborhood, they don’t grow up in it, they move, they change houses every four or five years. So, that’s another key force.
Traditional groups have broken down, that the church is no longer the center for people. These are some of the forces, but what has resulted in is that they travel in packs. So when you are hiring generation Y, be aware of this. They like to have a social life at work. They like to hangout together with people. With my six university students and we’ve got three school girls as well, they constantly hangout together. It’s what they do.
Now, some people have a—I guess a misconception that the young people don’t like being with older people, that is not true. What they don’t like is being an older people to constantly behave like my uncle that was always bossing them around, get all their parents telling them what to do. Older people that were late to the end of 30’s, absolutely they enjoy having them around. I’d prefer to be with younger people of course, but they enjoy working with older people. So think about the impact that you create and which means to the second point—fun, anyone likes a bit of fun at work, generation Y, a little bit more and a must.
What does fun mean to them? And it does not mean that you have a party everyday at work. Its simple things like having a notice board. In fact we must bring on this board because in our old premises we have one. And the common scenario everyday we’re outrageous, your know, from the young people at my office. They’re smart. They enjoy communicating that way. They enjoy sticking up fun things, whatever. They enjoy converting their environment to a bit more fun. They like hanging stuff around that looks good. Particularly the tea room, the coffee area, that’s where they like to gather and have a bit fun. So be aware that fun is an element we all like to enjoy our work. Young, a little bit more than most.
Balance, the great pleasure of work-life-balance, everyone wants some balance and increasing new people of my generation and people 10 to 15 younger than me are saying “We want balance in our lives.” One person’s balance—we’ll there is two differences. Firstly, what does balance mean? Balance could mean anything. I think, a young lady for a job as a manager in an accounting firm and I am looking for more work-life balance coming out making—well, my client needs someone to work pretty hard and it is a tough environment, working in the accounting profession. And I said, “Well, what does balance mean to you?” Her answer was that she looks for an afternoon off about once a month. So she can have leisure each weekend and go out go and get a good surfing.
Now, that was her idea of work-life balance and she actually—“well, what’s your typical work week?” “Sir, about 70 hours.” So work life balance and we’re talking with a woman here who is 27 years old. So, do not assume that work-life bal
