Eric Rochow: Hey everyone. I am Eric Rochow and this Real World Green. Today, we are going to talk about one that I bet you did not know about. Well, maybe that know about. I did not know about it until the other day but – you can recycle you sneakers.
I call them sneakers. You probably call them athletic shoes or tennis shoes or whatever. But, you can recycle these things. I mean, do you have a pile of these on your closet? You do not quite know do or they are in the garage maybe? Maybe your spouse has them in the garage?
Anyway, Nike has a program called Reuse the Shoe, and they recycle athletic shoes, they do not have to be Nike brand, they will take anything. And, they grind up all the stuff that used to make this like the rubber soles and the vinyl tops and stuff, and they make athletic fields out of them.
You know when you go to like a high school track and field or something, you are on the track and it is kind of rubbery feel to it? Well, that is what they are making with this. They grind the stuff up and I think it is called Nike Grind that is the material they make. And, they make athletic fields out of it.
They have done 265 athletic fields with this stuff and they have recycled 20 million sneakers. 20 million pairs of athletic shoes, I am sorry.
So, think about it. You can take this. They are recycling drop loft points. You can go the Nike site and find out about that. Or, you can also mail them to them.
But before you are going to mail them, ask everyone on your house or ask everyone on your apartment building or maybe in your school, “hey, let us collect all our sneakers and ship them off and have them recycled and made athletic fields so kids can run around because kids need to exercise!”
So, take these. Well, when they are ready to be recycled that is, put them in a box, send them of to Nike or take them to a drop loft point, and you are green! You know you can turn this into green. Who knew! I do not know.
I really ware my sneakers out, you know, I just do all sorts of things with them. Use fire or walk in horse manure but, it might be time soon.
Alright, anyway, come to the website, green house. www.green-house.tv. We have some links there to where you can find out where the drop off or ship your sneakers.
Alright! Make it a great, I will see you later.
