Daniel: Hi! My name is Daniel, I am 31, I live in New York, New York, and my question is, what’s the difference between regular and light cigarettes? Andrea King: Well Daniel, this is defined by the Federal Trade Commission, the FTC, and they have machines that measure these ingredients in cigarettes. So to have the distinction of being a light cigarette, the tar level in cigarette from this machine smoking needs between 6.5 and 14.4 milligrams, and if it’s over 14.4 milligrams then it’s called a regular cigarette. Interestingly, studies have shown that the market share for light cigarettes is much higher in the last 15-20 years, but lung cancer rates have stayed -- remained steady and they have also found about the toxins in cigarettes are the same in people who smoke light cigarettes versus regular cigarettes. So there really is not safer smoking in those light cigarettes.
