Kim Myles: Hey everybody! I’m Kim Myles and we are talking design secrets now all of use
have that piece of furniture that item that is from a bygone area in our lives. Either
was a handy down and we are inherited it or it was from styles long ago that we
have sense move fast. We are little to throw it away but we don’t want to buy
something new. Here is what you do, you reimaging your repurpose, Aaron
perfect example of this. Aaron have the gigantic bookshelves, that one that we’ve
all seen that takes up in entire wall, this one was a dark brown wood has a very
dated look and what I love about this solution is that he hit it with the coat of
white paint and that’s the secret right there. Anything you don’t like a coat of
white paint is inexpensive and immediately offers the personality of any piece that
you have. And they separated them, who says that they have to live together? So
one became a china cabinet, two became bookshelves and what is fantastic about
that I think is that at the end of that there is a very high in kind of built in look.
He got all of this from an item that they already had which is brilliant and so
smart. Now this is something that I have come out against on my show and in my
makeover repeated. A perfect example, I have home owners who had the gigantic
rectangle dining table. I know I was going to use them a space but I don’t want to
throw down and I really have to take that time to put my mind to work and look at
it and see what about it, could work in this space, what does the space need and
you ask you that question. What do I need in the space? In there case they needed
a mantel, so thought alright that was a perfectly good wood. Let’s cut this table
down and let’s use it as a mantel. I tell you this was totally I’m a hot moment for
me, looking at something and seeing beyond it’s personally and seeing what it’s
potential les. We cut off one ended it so the legs and this kind of the edge of the
top of the table and pop that right in as a mantel totally unexpected, completely
unique, a conversation piece in the space and it was free and then the rest of the
table you know we had this whole sheet of wood for the top of the table. This
homeowner had an entertainment unit, this entertainment unit having the doors so
all of the electronics are on display so we cut the rest of the table down and pop
those in as doors on the entertainment unit and they’re you go we solve the
problem with an item that we already had. So repurposing, reimagining and
redesigning.
Another trying that we pull this off on the show, there was an entertainment space
and I knew that I wanted the bar in that space but I wanted to do something
unexpected and at the end of up going with salvage doors so it was a double door,
they rotate, they really distress they’re old and they have all this history. I have
my carpenter cut it down so the rest of the front to they’re side and there was a
top. We stop some glass on it and I tell you what it became a fantastic costume
bar and again I show piece in the space. I don’t want to encourage you to little hat
you already have because I promise you maybe it’s not a huge pair of doors and
maybe it’s not shelves and maybe it’s a small table a side table some small item.
But you do have something that you can completely reinvasion, completely turn
around and they incorporate into your space.
