Jennifer: Hi we are here with our friend Paul Carlson and he is a Certified Clinical Hypnotherapist and life coach here in Dallas Texas.
Dan: So Paul, what is the difference between the various types of couples counseling that is available, we are talking about traditional counseling that everybody gets hypnotherapy and all the alternative treatments that we are hearing about. So what is the real distinction between these?
Paul: Gees, there is, in psychology alone, there is over 300 different disciplines or different techniques or approaches to psychoanalysis which is also known as talk therapy, this is what the psychologist do today. Psychiatrist today, not all of them but most of them are what we call bio psychiatrists and what they do is they believe that the genesis or the reason for all psychological problems is a chemical imbalance and so they treat the problem clinically with.
Jennifer: Drug them?
Paul: Yeah, with neuroleptic drugs okay, and sometimes that is absolutely appropriate. If you got somebody that is, let us say suicidal, it is not a bad idea to get him on something so they do not commit suicide and then you can work through the problem some other way. Now that is my opinion. I am not a doctor, okay I am not a medical doctor so I am not giving medical advice I am just conveying to you some of the stuff that I come across in my studies.
Included in psychoanalysis which is talk therapy would be behavior therapy that is a very successful method of doing therapy today, it is kind of like what Dr. Phil does, maybe minus his attitude, okay? There is also religious based talk therapy, people in the United States, many of them being evangelical Christians, feel more comfortable going to Christian based therapy and there is other religious based therapy out there as well.
Jennifer: It is their belief system.
Paul: Sure, whatever they are comfortable with. There are also alternative types of therapy out there, EFT (Emotional Freedom Technique), TFT (Thought Feel Therapy), BSFF (Be Set Free Fast), the Sedona method and of course what I do which is clinical hypnotherapy. All of these approaches have their various strengths and their various weaknesses and whichever one you feel attracted to which everyone feels right for you that is the one to approach.
Also you will find that if you are looking for insurance based payment for these services--you’re going to find in the United States, this is not necessarily true in the rest of the world, but in the United States, you’re going to be basically working on psychoanalysis behavior therapy, talk therapy with a Christian based or religious based counseling. When you get some of the into the alternatives, mainstream therapists us these alternative methodologies but many of them don’t. So if you are getting into the alternative things, you generally have to pay for that yourselves, that is not going to be reimbursed by the insurance companies. So it depends on what your motivations are and what you really feel attracted to.
The main thing is if you are having problems and you tried fixing them on your own—many people spend decades trying to work through their repeating problems, we call them a life script or a life tape. The things that we just repeat over and over again, it is like why don’t we move past this, generally can’t do that on your own, for most people, there is a few people that could pull it off on their own. But most people, if they go a to a therapy, most therapy is done on people in their 40s, 50s and 60s, they have to have this repeating pattern enough until they finally say enough is enough and I am tired of this, I want to do something to change it, okay. And then they go to therapy, one of the problems to is that people don’t stick with it long enough to fix the problem, they go in, they go three or four times, they say oh, you know I did not notice any huge movement and so money is tight, I am going to stop doing this. Well you have to realize that if you do that, you are going to have that repeating pattern for the rest of your life.
