Hi! I’m Bob Schmidt with Home Remodel Workshop.
Have you ever experienced that after flushing a toilet, about the time it shuts off, you have a heavy banging sound on the wall? We may have a simple solution for that.
This is a typical fill valve found in the back of most toilet tanks. When the water starts to raise in the tank, raising the ball, suddenly at the very end, the valve will shut off, immediately, just “boom!” creating a shock wave that will go back down the pipe. Now what this is, is a toilet fill valve with a slow shut off valve. That way the, the water instead of just suddenly shutting off, it’ll blend down stopping it from creating that shock wave that goes down the pipe. This could lessen your problem. Now be real careful when you go to your plumbing supply house. A lot of these valves look the same, and some of them aren’t slow close or quiet valves. Make sure you’re getting what you pay for.
As a little side note, some people who have this problem in their house, they also have a problem with their washing machine. Exact same thing. They actually make what they call a shock arrester that could be put in your water line, which is like a shock absorber for that shock wave. Any plumber could easily put it in or if you know how to solve it yourself, you could possible do that. And speaking of that, we have a video out on soldering you could check that out.
