Male Speaker: There is no doubt Canadian families want to eat more nutritious foods, but a recent survey shows many families find it difficult to incorporate healthy foods into their daily meals. With kids back in school and various demands on our time, about a fifth of Canadian say, more nutritious food takes too long to prepare, and families that do manage to incorporate healthy meals admit it's difficult to do daily, and let's face it.
Kids and some adults can be fussy eaters. So changing their diet even to make it healthier can be a challenge. Food producers are always looking for ways to meet that challenge, and recently there has been a huge step forward. Rob Kowal is the President of a Canadian company which helps food manufactures find nutritional solutions.
Rob Kowal: Food manufactures are innovating by incorporating natural and functional ingredients into foods that people eat everyday. Ingredients like Inulin are fitting that bill. It's a natural plant based source, soluble dietary fiber, extracted from Chicory root. Inulin is a prebiotic fiber, which means it's not digested in the stomach or small intestine, and reaches the large intestine intact, and promotes good digestive health. It doesn't cause blood sugar levels to rise, so it may be good for those with diabetics. It's also lower in calories than other typical carbohydrates, and inulin make you feel full for longer, so it's helps with appetite and weight control.
Male Speaker: One of the first companies to use inulin in pasta is Ronzoni Foods, the maker of Catelli pasta. They have developed a white pasta with much more fiber. Thanks to inulin. Karen Scicluna, is the Director of Marketing for Ronzoni.
Karen Scicluna: With Inulin, we've actually been able to reinvent one of Canada's favorite dishes, pasta. And this product has been in development for several years, and we are now able of offer consumers the familiar taste of white pasta. It's three times the fiber of regular pasta, providing one third of an adult's daily fiber intake. Consumers are telling us it tastes great, and they are trilled that their families can still enjoy their favorites like Mac and cheese, and get more nutrition. It really is the best of both worlds.
Male Speaker: Consumers will continue to demand healthy food products, and to meet that demand manufactures will continue to look forward innovative ingredients.
