Hi! Today we are going to look at a series of right hand exercises. They are designed to develop your right hand control. From finger style player you have got to have right hand control or because that's where half of the music is coming from currently. We are going to start by a numbering of fingers. We are going to have the thumb T, first finger one, second finger two and third finger three.
It's important to remember when you play that you are pushing your finger through the plane of the string, like that and that's what we want as a smooth round tone. What we don't want is this hopping sound. So you are not plucking away from the fingerboard, you are pushing through the string kind of from the bottom of the guitar here up, okay.
So let's take a look at these exercises. We are going to start by putting a thumb on the sixth string, our first finger on the third string, second finger on the second string and third finger on the first string and now we are just going to pluck in the next sequence. Now remember nothing with the left hand here okay. Thumb, one, two, three. Thumb, one, two, three.
The example two will be thumb, three, two, one; thumb, three, two, one. Example three is thumb, two, one, three; thumb, two, one, three. Example four will be thumb, one, three, two; thumb, one, three, two. Example five will be thumb, three, one, two; thumb, three, one, two. Example six, we are going to start using the thumb a little more actively. We are going to have thumb, one, thumb, two, thumb, three. Thumb, one, thumb, two, thumb, three.
Now you will notice that I am stopping the strings and not letting them to ring out constantly or continuously. This is a technique called string damping and it's something that you already do, I am sure with your left hand, maybe with your right hand. Very common to do with your left hand. Pluck the strings, release pressure and the sound of string stops. We are doing sort of the same thing with out right hand. We can apply a note, put our finger on it and that stops the string.
So as you practice these exercises, include that as part of your practice. You are kind of getting the two for one in all of your practice turn like that. Now for example seven, we are going to look at thumb, three, thumb, two, thumb one. Thumb, three, thumb, two, thumb, one. Example eight is thumb, two, thumb, one, thumb, three. Thumb, two, thumb, one, thumb, three. Example nine is thumb, two, thumb, three, thumb, one. Thumb, two, thumb, three, thumb, one. Example ten is going to be thumb, one, thumb, three, thumb, two. Thumb one, thumb, three, thumb, two.
For example eleven, we are going to have the thumb, three, thumb, one, thumb, two. Thumb, three, thumb, one, thumb, two. Example 12 is where we begin with more intense study of our thumb and for this set of exercises we are just going to play with our thumb. With the thumb it's kind of the opposite of the pluck with the finger and that we are pushing our thumb down toward the floor, but again, you want to play through the plane of the string, push through the string and have your thumb come to where the strumming are. String below in the fifth string in this case.
So example 15 is going to be six, five, four; six, five, four. Example 13 will be four, five, six; four, five, six. Example 14, we kind of get into an alternating base thing, six, four, five, four; six, four, five, four. Example 15 is going to six, five, six, four; six, five, six, four. Example 15 or 16 rather, is going to be five, four, six, five; five, four, six, five. Then example 17, it's kind of an alternating basing again. Five, four, six, four; five, four, six, four.
You should take these exercises and incorporate them into your daily practice. Spend five or ten minutes doing it. Really think about what you are doing as you are doing it. This wills kind of drive at home for you better. I think that most people will learn better if they practice on a daily basis. Even if it's somebody for a short period of time practicing five days in a week, a 30 minute practice session, will benefit you more than practicing one two and a half hour session. It's just the way our brain singer work. But have fun with these. Remember it's just an exercise to help us be able to more efficiently play music, and playing music is what we are after, okay. See you next time.
