Shalom, this is Rabbi Jonathan Ginsburg of the Ezra-Habonim, Niles Township Jewish Congregation of Skokie Illinois. This video is about Jewish ritual objects that should be in the home. First of all you have to start with Shabbat. The Shabbat requires the Kiddush cup and there are many kind with usually they are made of silver and not always. Wine goblets that you put wine or grape juice in to make the sanctification prayer to for Friday night also for the major festivals like Rashshasana, pass over, Shavuot and Succoth, so that is a Kiddush cup.
You also need candle sticks there are many kinds you need at least two. Sometimes people add them for the all the members of the family and they come in many shapes. They are often silver or copper, brass, ceramic that usually have a shape like this but they can be also different shapes. For example here is a different kind, nicely decorated and made up of glass and these are the standard Shabbat candles that you can pick up and either 12 or package of 72 that last for several hours when they are lit on Friday nights.
Also for the end of Shabbat for we have Dala set, a Dala set is the brief ceremony where you end in Shabbat. Again you need a Kiddush cup you also need a braded candle and usually a candle holder like this and a spice packs. And they all come with all kinds of shapes, you put some nice smelling spices in their and actually you will need for Havdalah. Then for other holidays there are other ritual items for example for Hanukkah you need a Hanukkiah, which is the Minora for Hanukkah. There are many kinds, but what they have in common is that there is a helper candle that goes here and then eight candles here. And I will do another video on Hanukkah that I will explain Hanukkah and do one in kind of the songs and how do like the Minora but you should have a Minora in your house on display and then for Passover off course people should have a Passover plate. I have a video also explaining the Passover plate but people should have them in their home.
And off course Mezuzah I have a video on Mezuzah but you should have books in your homes too. Jewish people are called the people of the book, at least you have a Chumache, which is the five books of Moses and it contains the Torah readings by week also the prophetic portions we read in the synagogue, good commentary. This one is called Aitshaim it is putt up by the conservative movement and it is a very good new translation in commentary with the Hebrew text.
Also a prayer book Shabbat, Siddur and the daily Siddur that gives you on the prayers you need. Those are some of the basic rituals item. You can get them off course at our synagogue gift shop if you live in Chicago or a Jewish book store you can get them online. Those are just some of the items, there are also other items for other holidays they talk about those videos but those are the basic minimal things. Also for Shabbat some people have a special plate where they put the special bread the Kalla and nicely decorated covers. They put it on Jewish homes should have Prayer Shawls into fill in. I have a video on Prayer Shawls and there are other videos I need to about to fill in the Folactories. So I hope that explains some of the basics about Jewish ritual home items.
