Derek Allen: Hey! Welcome to watchmojo.com. I am your host Derek and today Corran Addison, a river surfer, taught us a little bit about the differences between river boards and your normal ocean boards. What's difference between a river surfing board and like a regular ocean surfing board?
Corran Addison: Basically, river boards are a little bit wider, they are a lot shorter and they have less rocker. So rocker, for those who --- what that is, it's the rocker which is essentially the curve with the sweep of the board from end-to-end this way, and river surfing boards have really flat tail rocker and really low entrance rocker. What that does is it makes them really, really fast on the wave for their length. So in the ocean, I surf with a 6'3" or a 6'9" squash tail, on the river, I surf with a 5'5" or a 5'9" just to give you an idea. So about a whole foot shorter.
Derek Allen: So when you are out river surfing, what are you going to be wearing, what do you need to put on?
Corran Addison: Well, that depends on the season. If it's July and August, you are wearing a board short if you are a guy and bikini if you are a girl. If you are a European guy then it's like wearing Speedo. But, basically it's board shorts and bikinis during the summer months, and in the spring and in the fall, that's a wet suit.
You have something like this. This is a women's wet suit. This is a 2-3 millimeter wet suit, and it's not seam sealed. So the seams are knot tapes on the inside and so water does come in through this wet suit but it's 2-3 millimeter, that's why we call it spring suit.
So basically June or beginning of September when it's just a slight chill in the air, you wear something like this. Now, this is a 3-4 millimeter wet suit. This wet suit is, the seams are water proof, it's muck thicker. So the quality of the neoprene is far higher. So it's a lot more expensive. But, then on this wet suit, it's really designed for when the water is pretty cold and the air is pretty cold. This wet suit here will really keep you dry and really keep you warm.
Derek Allen: Proving how passionate surfers are about sport.
Corran Addison: We are passionate about it. Surfing completely destroys your social life. As soon as you learn to surf, you stop going out because you want about to get up early in the morning, and if you go out, you can't get up early.
You stop going out, because if you spend money on alcohol, you don't have it to buy boards and wet suits and things, and basically you make new friends and you forget your old ones, and then your old friends call and say, you don't call me anymore, and it's like, I don't want to call you anymore. You don't do anything fun. You go out, and you party, you spend your money. I am going to do surfing.
