HI everybody! I am Robert Verdi, decorator to the stars and I am going to tell you how you can get some Hollywood style without having a Beverly Hills budget.
You know when you see your favorite starlet on the red carpet, and you think to yourself, “How does she do it? She looks so perfect every time.” Well, I can promise you, she knows the importance of a good foundation. And under the glitz and glamour, she has got shaping garments and great skin care regimen, and that is how she does it. She also uses that same principle when she is decorating her home. So, I am going to give you some quick fixed tips.
Walk through your home, check out all your moldings, your window moldings, your baseboard moldings, your crown moldings and go into the bath and check the tub and check the sink. What are you looking for is areas with caulking and then you get yourself some Caulking Singles, they are so fabulous. Get rid of the caulk on, this is easy as tear, squeeze and then toss. That is how you get a great foundation in your home then you can move to decorating.
So, people always say, Robert, how do I start? Do I start with carpet? Do I start with wall color? I say start with something you love. Find an object or a photograph, something that really inspires you and then you use that to guide you through the rest of the room whether it is color or style, you will find something that really inspires you. I love doing neutral rooms, gray sands, camels, all of those colors are really beautiful backdrops to pop with fabulous color. Great toss pillows on your drab sofa make it even more fabulous and of course, little area rugs whether on as hardwood floor or on wall-to-wall carpeting, it can really add an extra pop.
If you are looking through a fabulous magazine, your favorite magazine and you see a celebrity’s home and it has got an exquisite fabric and you think how can I get that? It is so out of my reach. Well, it is not! Get a couple of yards of that fabric and you will be able to make some toss pillows or maybe some placemats for the dining room. Maybe you could even trim a ready-made curtain panel with that fabric and you will love it. It really makes your own personal style statement.
Probably one of the things that people overlook the most is lighting. Here is a secret to decorating success. Put dimmer switches on every light throughout the house. From your hallway, to your bedrooms, your guestrooms, everything! -- kitchen, living room, dining room and bathrooms and it is really a great way to control the spirit and the mood in the house. So, when you are having company over, turn on all the lights and dim them down a little and it is really beautiful.
Now, ladies, you know you have been asking your husbands to do all this quick fix tip things and he does not do them. Every weekend, he is doing something that you do not want him to be doing when he should be, caulking the sink; he should be helping you fix up the house so you can decorate it. You can do it on your own now.
Here is what you do. Get yourself a great little bag and fill it with all the necessary things you do to do the greatest quick fixes. So, paint brushes, both sponge and bristle, all your paint colors from the entire house, so if there is a scuff on the wall, you can do a quick touch up. A tape measure. And inside this bag, this is really the key. This is the secret to decorating success, all your fabric and paint swatches are kept in there and a little book that has every measurement, all your window measurements, all your floor measurements, every measurement you would ever need to buy anything for the house. So, that way, if you trip across a fabulous find at a flea market or all your bargain basement shopping, you can check your book and you will know if it will fit in that little corner between the bed and the wall in the guestroom. That is how decorators get it right every time.
