Robot Interaction Treatment for Autistic Children
Dr. Travis Stork: Autism is a very serious problem. And children can benefit from interaction with some of this like now.
Dr. Jim Sears: Because a lot of there's a lot of aspect to autism but most of the kids have some a bit of trouble or a lot of trouble relating to others and understanding other people feelings and intentions because they miss a lot of those social queues like facial expressions and that can really affect the children’s social development.
Dr. Travis Stork: Well and what’s interesting is this robot actually provide social interaction. It’s much simpler than interaction with the person. And since children with autism do miss some of those social cues, they can get frustrated. They can actually learn skills by repetitive play with robots, because the robot is predictable. And we actually have some video of now interacting can you talk us through this Cedric?
Cedric: That was many physical capabilities. It can get up when he falls. It can understand its environment or board obstacles. That is deeply programmed for human interaction. I mean that now it can understand what you are saying. It can understand the sound -- the noise is coming from. Or even recognizes a human face or either an object. Everything is possible just a matter of imagination.
Dr. Travis Stork: And what’s great is imagination that’s something that obviously children have so much of and now -- both now and whether it’s a girl or a boy.
Cedric: Now actually, this is a girl, the red one and I got the boy, yeah.
