Jason: Hi! I'm Jason from Coeur D'alene. Is childhood Asthma genetic or caused by environment? James Li: That's a very interesting question, Jason. Our understanding now is that genetic factors and environmental factors are both important in Asthma. We've known for a long time that Asthma does run in families. So there's a genetic component. There are scientists trying to determine what the specific genes are, that can predispose to Asthma, but there's no clear answer yet. The environmental exposures are also important in the development of Asthma. So exposures to aeroallergens and bacteria, especially early in life, can predispose the Asthma as well.
