Hi I’m Gene Wang Fantasy Football writer for the Washington Post and
washingtonpost.com. Welcome to my video on how to play Fantasy Football. In this
segment we’re going to discuss rules and regulations. Now the most important part of this
segment is going to be your scoring system. Now generally the industry standard is
awarding 6 points for every touchdown. Now that means a passing touchdown, a rushing
touchdown, a receive me touchdown or if your defense recovers fumble, intercepts the
past and returns it for a touchdown that’s also going to be six points.
As I said that’s the industry standard and there’s no reason why it should be the standard
in your league as well. Now the next part is determining yardage bonuses. This can be
awarded incrementally and increments of 25 yards 50 yards or 100 yards. Some leagues
award 1 point for example for every 25 yard of running back rushes for or 1 point for
every 25 yards of receiving a wide receiver gets in a game. Other leagues awarded from a
100 yards up so if you’re running back west for a100 yards, he’s going to get say 10
points.
But if he rushes for 99 yards, he’s not going to get any points. So that’s a termination for
you, you’re other people in the league and your commissioner to make. Now once you
have that setup you going to want to implement that into the website you’ve chosen to
keep track of your fantasy league and let me show you what a typical— look like in a
fancy football website.
From the home page of your fantasy website go to the league home option on the scroll
down hit rules and all the rules freely should be listed right here from when the draft is
until if your choosing AFC and NFC players, what positions your going to be filling.
What your transaction rules are your schedules including which weekly playoffs begin?
How your scoring is based whether it’s head to head in this case it is and then point
increments as we talked about earlier 6 points for a touchdown, 3 points for field goal, 2
points for your defense, for safety and so and so forth.
Now if your taking part new league your commission is going to have to go to the
website and enter the rules himself or if you want to use a standard scoring system that
the website provides that’s fine to it’s a lot simpler I found you know if you really want
to get intricate you’re going to have to enter it yourself but most of these work just fine
based on the industry standard you set up on each particular website.
Now that you’re scoring system is in place you got to want to pick divisions. Now if you
have a 12 team league you’re probably going to have 3 divisions of 4 teams. If you have
a 16 team league for example you’re probably going to have 4 divisions with 4 teams
each and that’s going to determine the length of your schedule on who plays at which
teams each week.
Let me show you what a typical division breakdown looks like on a fantasy football
website. So here we have a typical division breakdown on fantasy football website as you
noticed this team right, this league right here is made up of 14 teams in 3 divisions so
there’s one division that’s going to have 4 teams the other 4 divisions are going to have 5
teams each and your going to determine who plays who basically within division you are
going to play each team twice and then you are going to have a couple of other outer
division games and that’s going to be generated by your website randomly.
As long as you input which two teams— as long as you input for the league that you want
to play teams in your division twice and then it will determine the rest of your games as
randomly so that’s how we determine the division and who plays who in the course of the
season.
Now that your divisions are set, you can figure out the length of your season. Now a lot
of leagues don’t go the full 17 weeks of a football season because there some players are
worried that top players at the end of the season are going to be playing because quite
frankly if you’re Indianapolis calls for example the New England pay its rates you may
already have wrapped up the division many weeks before and you don’t want to risk
injury to your top players and that affects your fantasy lineups.
So typically what many leagues do is they go the first 14 weeks as the regular season then
they use week 15 as the first week of their playoffs and then week 16 as their Super
Bowl. But again it’s entirely up to you, now once you’ve determined that you’re going to
want to figure out your free agency and that’s a very important part of fantasy football
because as a GM it’s your jog to get the best players in the field and if there are injures
which inevitably there are injury in the course of the football season you are going to
want to scour the free agent wave wire to add players to your roster to help them win.
And you know even if you don’t have injuries you may want to cut a player on your team
that’s not performing well and add another player who no one else has picked up that’s
going to help you win. There are many cases like that in fantasy football where a guy has
got undrafted all of a sudden half length of the season he’s going to become a star and a
fantasy player has wisely picked him up. He’s been a great value over someone who has
been a starter for that team previously so I’m going to show you how to do that and
here’s where a typical fantasy waver wire looks like on a fantasy football looks like.
Here’s a typical fantasy football website. The homepage and to get to the free agent
listings, we’ll cook on players to get your drop down bar then click on free agents. Now
as you see this website lists by position and they also have leaders on offense and defense
as well. So let’s say you want to pick up a wide receiver. You go down to the wide
receiver, click it and now your whole list of wide receiver comes up for you all the
available free agents.
Now if you want to pick up say Dwayne Bow of the Kansas City Chiefs you would click
on his name. Here he comes up at the top of your screen and you would click pick up this
player. And if it were in the season there would be a season that comes up that says you
have added this player and then as we talked about earlier the commission will decide at
the end of the week if you get this player or not and you could add them through your
line up for the start of kick off on Sunday.
I want you to determine your rules for picking up and adding free agents, the
commissioner of the league becomes very important here. Here she is going to be the
person who determines which teams or what at which free agents. Now at the start of a
season when each team is zero and zero it’s going to come first come first serve basis for
free agents and some leagues have a rule in place where you cannot pick up a free agent
until two r three weeks in the season.
But if you have a league that allows you to pick up free agents right away and you don’t
like how you drafted your team or a couple of players in there or you may not feel
comfortable with then go ahead and pick up your free agent and be the first one in and
that’s how and the commissioner is going to determine which team is going to get the
free agent first.
Now if you’re in Vegas for example you’re probably bidding for free agents which means
one team may bid $1 for a player, another teammate 5 another team maybe a 10 the
commissioner has to go on that website each Friday and figure who’s out be the most and
the team gets awarded that free agent.
Now once you have all those rules in place for agency and your commissioner has
decided how he’s going to operate, how he’s going to runt he league your ready to draft
your team.
