Connie: About half of New Jersey global warming emission comes from transportation. So today shows about green cars and alternative fuels.
Greg: Now obviously the New Jersey weather has taken a turn for us, but we will not let that stop us. I want to do the show for a while.
So, I am old motor head with swish pot from muscle cars. This is actually my 69 Cougar here. And my newly green confession for this show is that I have never own a car that was not AV8.
Connie: That is not true dear. Now, you want a V10.
Greg: Crumbly woman. Have you no shame? Yes, last it is true. My current vehicle is AV10. I bought this car when Connie and I were digging decisions and we needed to pickup to toward year. And after cooking transmission and then few other trucks I want something.
So admittedly, fuel efficiency and environmentalism were not my chief concern at the time. And you are all here to bare witness to the challenge of applying new ideas.
Connie: Sorry, we will dispense for that truck later in the show.
Greg: I have a feeling you change my vehicle.
Connie: Possible so. So today we are going to look at the big five alternative fuel options, which are biodiesel, hybrid, electric, fuel cell, and ethanol. I will also be giving you some auto theme green tips later and we will visit the Wayne Auto Spa, which is the greener place to spiff up your ride.
Greg: But, let us start by getting extreme with a veggie diesel conversion.
Extreme Green
Greg: Few months ago, I spent a couple of nights with our Matt converting his mobile diesel to run on straight vegetable oil. We will take a look at some of that process and we will talk about some of the things we learn.
Connie: This is a radical idea as it may seen. Fuel, diesel, engine was design to run on peanut oil. That design was modified overtime to run on thinner petroleum base products as they become more lively available.
Here is an over view of the system we are putting in.
Greg: Okay, Matt. So once you give us a little bit of an explanation of how this wholes bridge is going to work.
Matt: All right, well at first time I car up on regular diesel fuel and what happens is that coolant from the engine machine hot is sent to the veggie fuel tank, which warms with the vegetable oil to thin enough consistency that can be use as a fuel. And then I pretty much to see the switch and of course running out on straight vegetable oil.
Greg: Cool. So what it is since I guess the vegetable oil because it stick, you want to make sure that it is thinned out before it goes through lines so that congealed in the engine as I cut this idea. Clog up the fuel injectors. What is indicate?
Matt: All right. Well first, we have 13 galloon in the fuel tank which hold the vegetable oil inside the grouches, the heating core of the engine coolant to heat up the oil.
Greg: I noticed that that tank is round.
Matt: It is round.
Greg: Why is that?
Matt: It is fabricated for directly into the spare tire well in my car.
Greg: And what is next.
Matt: Next we have the vegetable oil fuel fusser, which is really desiderative diesel fusser with a core rap around it. That carries coolant for the car and heats up coolant inside the fusser.
Greg: Looks nice. I mean it is seems like a very simple idea, but nicely fabricated. Nice clean design.
Matt: Definitely that is in side.
Greg: Great.
Matt: After which the fuel extend to one or two solenoid valves and solenoid valves was controlled by me inside the car and I tell and I think whether we are on diesel or in veggie.
Greg: So this is actually—it is an electronic switch with two inlets, one for veggie, one for diesel and an outlet to the fuel injectors.
All right, so this is really where you make the switch between vegetable and diesels.
Matt: Yes, the hardly kit.
Greg: All right, cool. And what is that?
Matt: These were the instructions.
Greg: We do not even know if this is America. All right, let us get to it.
So what we have decided is that we are going to amount things on fire wall that seems to be the neatest place for us.
