Search engine optimization is simply the term used to describe the process of proactively working to have your website show up for a certain keyword phrase when someone does a search online.
The idea is to bring those searchers to your website because they are the group of people that are most interested in your product or service online. The first thing to consider when you want to begin search engine optimization is to ask yourself, what "keyword phrase" do I want my website to show up on the first page of the search engines when someone does a search online.
Once you have picked out this search term you want to include this term in the "title tag" of your webpage. The title tag simply tells search engines what the title of that webpage is so that it helps to index your webpage. Most programs that you will use to design your website will tell you where to enter the title tag when designing your website. If you are having a professional do it for you then you want to tell them the title tag you want to use.
Once you have finished with the title tag the next thing would be the description of the webpage, you want to make sure this is relevant and has keywords that are related or help describe your title tag.
The next very important component of your website would be content; your content is what search engine users are after when they search using the engines. The big players in search know this so you must provide unique content preferable on a regular basis to rank well with the search engines.
