Catherine: Hello Mark, we’ve been talking about research that conducted into executive to re-decisioning. Does the research tell us anything about success measurements?
Mark: Yes Catherine, we specifically asked these people what success is; we wanted to know have you seen your executive measured success. And we found there were three important criteria’s.
First of all, the level of influence that they have, the second being the level of personal and professional development that they have received and the third is a broad of contribution, a contribution outside of the organization into the community.
Catherine: So, this is not about money and power.
Mark: No, interesting isn’t it? I suspect that money and power are the two easiest things to measure when you’re not measuring how the success affects us but these executive are clearly telling us that there are three important criteria; influence, self actualization, and a broad of contributions.
Catherine: So how can we offer these success ingredients? Who should be doing these? Should it be the organization or should it be the individual?
Mark: well, it’s not up to me to say but clearly if both for organization and the individual focus on these and acknowledge what in fact are the important success ingredients, then both the company and the individual would be better off.
Catherine: And how would an organization actually create these success ingredients?
Mark: Well, organizations are doing a lot already. If you look at some of the leadership development programs and some of these programs are from the opportunity for leaders to participate in a broad of contributions. They may take on rolls within the charitable group. They may take on rolls within a not for profit group but they’re contributing outside these organizations.
We also see things such as executive coaching gaining in popularity and that’s great way of giving a senior personnel award. We know senior people been in self-actualization and professional development so allowing these senior people to have the reward of having the executive coaches a great way of saying that they are successful.
Catherine: Thank you for your insight Mark.
Mark: Thank you.
