Safari 4.0 in the wild - #5 - Security and Privacy in Safari 4.0

Hi! This is Mike Callahan, Dr. File Finder and welcome back to our special butterscotch.com 10 part series on Safari 4.0. In this segment, we’re going to look just briefly at some of the privacy and security functions that are built into Safari. Safari works very hard to keep you safe on the internet and has built in things including protection against phishing, safe downloads, proxy support, immigration with your antivirus software, malware protection, secure encryption, pop-up blocking, automatic updates and more. Here in Safari, we’re going to click on the gear icon, go down to preferences. And under the security tab, you can see that you can check the war when you visit a fraudulent site. You can enable or disable plug-ins, java, java script, you can block pop-up windows, you can determine how you handle cookies, would you accept them, always, never, or only from sites that you visit? You can see your cookies, also under this menu, you can turn on private browsing. What private dock browsing does is it doesn’t maintain a history of where you visit, what you download, what you fill onto forms and so on. So, when you exit private browsing, there is no trace of the sites that you’ve visited. Safari also has functions that integrate with your antivirus software so that when you download files or images, they're automatically scanned with your antivirus software. On our Mac, it's a safe download mechanism or when you attempt to open the Mac reminds you that the program came from the internet just so you know. It's also secure encryption which helps prevent forgery and digital tampering. And Safari uses the very latest in secure encryption. It's automatically updated so you always have the most current version. And there's also support from proxy, so Safari is designed from the ground up to keep you safe when you're on the web, to keep your private information private. Keep in mind that this is a multiple part series and be sure to listen to all 10 parts.
