Martin Vanderwood: A moments in attention a miscalculation, a distracted driver, CN wants to see these tragic scenes come to an end. Last year, across Canada there were 287 incidents involving railway crossings or trespassing that resulted in a 129 serious injuries or fatalities. To reduce these numbers, CN has launched an aggressive public awareness campaign called Target Zero and CN Police officers are holding safety blitz across the country to educate the public about safety at crossings and the danger of walking on railway tracks and property.
Serge Meloche: There are still too many accidents, injuries and fatalities. Target Zero is our goal, we do not and will not tolerate people disobeying signage or gates or trespassing on railway property.
Martin Vanderwood: CN's goal is to use education, prevention and enforcement until the number of accidents drops to zero. There are 55,000 public, private, and pedestrian railway crossings in Canada goes to half of all collisions between vehicles and trains occur at crossings with active warning devices such as gates, lights and bells. Trespassing is also a great concern to railways in Canada. Last year 47 people lost their life while trespassing on railway tracks and property.
Serge Meloche: Unfortunately people put their lives at risk. They put it simply; it's illegal and dangerous to walk on railway property and tracks. CN Police will continue to enforce a law against people committing these interactions. We will not be satisfied until we have zero accidents, zero injuries and zero fatalities.
Martin Vanderwood: CN Police asks the public to contact them immediately at 1-800-465-9239, if they see someone disobeying the signals at a railway crossing or trespassing on tracks or railway property. Martin Vanderwood reporting.
