This beautiful red pattern you see is not to be found on the back of the new Georgia Armani phone but it’s rather on the brand new Samsung Jet, a likable midrange multimedia device. Its face side doesn’t disappoint either. It houses a 3.1-inch display with white VGA resolution. Sent and End keys, a strange key in the shape of a prison that is used to guard the main menu no matter the sub-menu you have navigate to.
The good news is the Samsung Jet supports standard connectors only which are both on its top. The 3.5mm jack and the Micro USB port and the only button on its left hand side is the volume rocker while the screen lock and the double button are on the opposite. On the sixth side of the 3D cube, you’re to find shortcuts to the music player, gallery, games, FM radio, video player and the internet browser. Some of these have added functionality like the video player that allows it to preview files before they load it. Holding the same button pressed causes a menu to pop up. That is controlled through shaking the phone and to allow us access to duplications that are in turn controlled through the built in accelerometer.
You have a home screen that is completely in character of the Touchwiz interface and gives you three separate screens to place widgets of your own choosing. Plus, there is the option to download more. The most significant change to previous interface versions is the main menu itself. Now, it’s divided into three separate screens that are switched between by sliding to your finger and allows access to all telephone functions in quite similar way to the iPhone. This means there is no need for sub-menus. Unlike the iPhone and the—3D interface, Touchwiz doesn’t allow icon rearrangement.
The Samsung Jet delivers a pretty capable web browser and supports 3G and WiFi. Zooming in or out on things is implemented through double tapping and pages are loaded and rendered properly. And the good news is you can watch flash video content without any issues, say on the computer version of YouTube. And there is a specialized video player that takes care of streaming content.
The phone features a five megapixel auto-focus camera with built-in flash that supports smiling detection, fast motion shooting of up to nine frames and a bunch of other options plus it allows it to—set to white balance, contrast, color saturation and sharpness. We’re fascinated by both the audio and the video player. The format can be operated in landscape mode with all relevant album cover properly visualized while the—supports DivX and XviD video content and place them both with resolution of up to 720 pixels without a hitch.
As a whole, we do expect to see the Samsung Jet become the major rival of the LG arena. Despite its interface is less impressive or the fact that the notorious 3G cube is just a sophisticated way of using shortcuts. We do look forward to getting our hands on a final retail unit so we can subject to proper conclusive testing.
