Hello this is the Samsung Omnia HD which is expected to be one of the most powerful smart phones in the market but as you might guess, not everyone would be able to afford it. Fortunately you also find this one in the manufacturer’s catalogue. This is the S 5600 and it is also equipped with a touch sensitive screen but unlike the high end Omnia HD it will come at a much more affordable price.
Besides it is quite small and handy so you could easily use it with your thumb holding it.
The screen which is your main tool when using the phone measures at 2.8 inches and has a resolution of 240 by 320 pixels. Still you need to use the keys below it every once in a while. Here we have the send and end keys along with these large button which takes you one step back.
Holding it on the other hand will bring up the list of shortcuts. The back is slightly rough and feels really good. But what you find under the cover on the top will nicely surprise you. There is a micro USB slot used for charging and connecting toward the computer. There are just a few keys on the sides, on the left is the volume rocker and from the right are the hold button and the camera shutter.
Is there something missing? You're wondering if the memory can be expanded to through micro SD card, relax, this is possible but you need the battery first. However we won’t do this since the interface is somehow more interesting. We’ll hardly surprise you of we tell you that it is Touch Wiz.
This one doesn’t go and step away from Samsung phones since the F480 and characterizes with impressive yet not that functional widgets. In its latest models the manufacturer has incorporated different ways to widen their usage. In the S 5600 the home scree is divided into three areas similar to the G1 and delivers a lot of space that can be use to deploy a number of widgets.
The good news here is that the special new widget is on board allowing you download additional ones. The main menu has some cool colorful and detailed icons which give access to a large number of features. As a whole, the phone is equipped with every thing that an ordinary user could wish for. Organizer, Fm radio, Music player with sound recognition, photo gallery which by the way takes advantage of the integrated accelerometer in order to view the next or the previous images.
We want to complain however that the phone book seem to be a bit sluggish since searching doesn’t take place simultaneously with inputting characters but it does have a slider that filters your contacts by first letter.
The camera packs a 3 megapixel sensor with LED flash and offers a lot of settings. However we don’t think that the phone aim is set to compete in with a camera phone in its class. But still it would definitely post a threat to the first budget touch screen device. The LG Cookie. If it is really good enough for the purpose, you know when the phone launches officially.
Until then you can visit us at www.phonearena.com where you can read the review of its future competitor, the LG Cookie as well as our first impressions of the High end smart phones, the Omnia HD. Thanks for watching.
