Hi! David Caris here with another two-minute guitar trick. This is easy, you can do this. This is a riff that is used a lot by Santana and a lot of other people. It’s a classic rock type of a riff. It can be played a couple different ways. I’m going to show it to you a couple of ways where you bend the string and you get, this is what it sounds like.
[Demonstration]
Okay, so what do I have on the guitar to make it sound, you know more like Santana-type of riff. Well I do have some distortion and I do have a delay pedal on here although that’s optional and I have some compression. And the compression will really help you with sustain so if you really want to nail these types of sounds, I recommend you’re getting a compressor. It will also allow you to play these riffs at a much lower volume so that you don’t have to really crank your amp up to get the distortion, of course you know, Carlos, he’s at full throttle when he’s playing but at any rate here’s what I’m going to do, I’m going it to show it to you right now, you need to put your finger, your third finger on the fifteenth fret on the B-string, okay.
Can you see that? Alright, and then you’re going to take your index finger and you’re going to put it on the twelfth fret on the same string. And you’re going to strike the B-string once for the first part of this riff and you’re going to bend it.
[Demonstration]
And then you’re going to let it go down. Okay, so you bend it up and down.
[Demonstration]
And the next part is your index finger on the twelfth fret on the B-string.
[Demonstration]
Just that note and do the same thing you did as actually on the first part of the riff.
[Demonstration]
So it sounds like—
[Demonstration]
Okay, let’s do that one more time together. You’ve got your third finger on the fifteenth fret of the B-string and you’re bending it; you’re hitting the note once and letting it bend.
[Demonstration]
And then you’re going to the same string with your index finger on the twelfth fret.
[Demonstration]
You’re just hitting the note once. And then going back up to the fifteenth fret with your third finger and you're bending that again after you hit it.
[Demonstration]
And it sounds like this.
[Demonstration]
So how might that fit into a bunch of Santana sort of riffs that might go—
[Demonstration]
Etcetera. So one more time, let’s do it again. We’re going to go right up here with the third finger on the B-string on the fifteenth fret.
[Demonstration]
On the B-string on the twelfth fret; hit the note once. And then back up to the fifteenth fret.
[Demonstration]
This is easy, you can do it. Thanks for checking this out and I appreciate you for signing up to the stratoname channel. I’m going to have more licks that I’m posting. I also appreciate your comments. Thank you very much for tuning in.
