Amy Salinger: Hello again and welcome to this edition of Sass N Style. I am going to talk about belts. There is a million different shapes, sizes, colors. I am going to show you how to utilize each of those in different ways and don't forget, you also can get daily style tips at sassnstyle.com so you don't have to wait for your dose of me and my fashion tips. So let's go and talk about some belts.
We are again, of course, as you guys already know, the drill. I've recruited a friend. Sarah actually works in this beautiful studio like I said, as you can see behind us. We will give a little that I think you are going to like. This particular studio actually what they do is they produce a fiber called XLA, which is a stretch fiber and you find it in a lot of different products just like this beautiful white shirt that Sarah has on.
Where can you buy this great shirt besides Brooks Brothers?
Sarah: Well, now the Brooks Brothers store is nationwide and you can also buy it online at brooksbrothers.com. They usually have really great specials so you can usually get two for $189.
Amy Salinger: And that was a little bit of product placement so that I can use the studio for free. So the first belt we're going to do is this beautiful red belt. It's a standout piece just like a lot of the jewelry I pick. That was my idea of a leap, did you like that? Alright!
Sarah: You need to do that ...
Amy Salinger: I know, only it doesn't work with this. Obviously, this is a very simple sheath dress. For those of you that are regulars, you remember me talking about the sheath dress. Now we're showing you by layering under. By putting in a great crisp button down underneath, you're making this fairly sexy dress more work appropriate. Now to add some plump to this outfit, I am going to add this belt like I was talking about.
Adding a belt to your waist is making you basically look as skinny as possible. So your waist is the smallest part of your body. By adding a very bold color, you're really drawing attention to the middle and this is a more expensive looking belt. Didn't cost me a fortune! I got it at TJ's or something. So, you're upping the ante of the entire outfit. Ready for the next belt?
Sarah: Yeah!
Amy Salinger: Alright let's do it! Next up, we've this metallic, thin, stretchy belt. You guys know I love using metallic as my neutrals. It's thin but it has interesting details. Not only is it stretchy but lo and behold, it has this beautiful adjusting pieces on either end. A lot of times clients will ask me, well, if I top my belt, I have to be shorter; it's only going to fit my waist. I know!
You know un-tuck doesn't mean not put together. Don't tuck everything in this; it's so boring and I hate boring. So we're going to put it around the waist. We have it tight enough for Sarah's little tiny waist. See how it makes it flair a little bit. You always want to have a little bit more material going on in the shirt just like Sarah and I have going on.
Now like I said, this belt could be used in a couple of different ways. Go ahead and tuck that in for me and I am going to lengthen it a little bit so that we can put it lower down on Sarah's hips. I've usually -- I am going to do this as I talk. So I am going to be very close to you, you'll probably like it. As you're putting it through, the key about doing a belt through loops on hands is like I said, to have a little bit of material blouse. The last thing you want is to have muffin-top where the lot going -- your fat rolls are hanging over the edge. You don't necessarily always need high-waisted pants but low-risers and belts don't work. Don't do it, it's very scary!
It's actually bringing out the gold from the buttons and it's got a lot of detail with all in the middle. You always want to separate your fun. So if she is wearing a big pair of earrings that'd be great or even, here, put on this bracelet. I always suggest if you have on a fun belt, put on a fun bracelet. All of the gold is literally into the middle, because your hand falls right at your waist, right?
Logic and fashion marry each other! Next belt, let's do it!
Sarah: Alright!
Amy Salinger: Come on! Next up, the big belt, the braided belt! We're going to do kind of a two-in-one combo and you can learn about both of them at one. You'll have to be either fairly tiny or long-waisted to pull off this belt. She is very petite through the middle so she can pull off something like this. This is probably the widest I'd go on her. Wear a more fitted cardigan. This obviously skins Sarah's body so it's not going to look as bulky when I put a belt on with it.
We're going to put it around in the middle. You want to make it as tight as you can without suffocating. Now the problem we all have is limp belt. The bobby pin is there. You think it's for your hair? Think again! We're going to go fairly towards the end, you're going to open up your bobby pin here, you're going to find one of the braided parts and get it through there. I know I can do it.
I think I can, I think I can, I think I can! Now all you're going to do is, is you're going to do the same thing through the belt. So you take this and you're going to open it up again and yes! You're not really hurting your belt. I just like make sound effects like things are difficult, but it's not.
Now it's going to stay together for the rest of the evening. No hands, no hands! If this didn't have braids in it, you can literally use double-sided tape on the back of the belt and smack it up there against the other side of the belt and it'll stick. And think about your shoemaker been your best friend ever. You are going to have your belt shortened for like $5.
Thank you! Moving on! So for the finale of this episode, I have this great white kimono belt. It's literally what appears to look like a piece of ribbon. There is a couple of different ways you can wear it but the way that I have it is right in the middle; hanging on the edge, we're going to wrap around the back. Now once I have a hold of it, I am going to switch it over to the left because I would like to tie it on the left. We're going to literally just double-knot it. I mean this is so easy, it's ridiculous!
It's cut like triangles on the end so all you do is broaden that on, broaden that one. I am wearing all black. I am very bold with the white in the middle, makes my waist look even smaller.
