This episode we're going to be talking about looking fantastic at the office, otherwise known as office chic, otherwise known as creative conservative. Lorenda from 'Sex and the City'. She never looked boring, she was a lawyer, she was wearing suits everyday, but she always looked fabulous.
I hate those people who are like, well, I have to wear a suit, so it doesn't matter, I'm going to be boring. No, no, no, you don't need to be boring, you need me to help you look fabulous at work. Let's go try out some office chic looks.
So first we are going to introduce our lovely friend Lynda, who has made one appearance so far in the jewelry episode. Smile Lynda, this is fun. Yeah, we are having fun! Lynda, what do you do for a living, where are you going everyday?
Lynda: I am going to school, as well as an office.
Amy Salinger: Okay. She is going to school, but she also is going to an office, so there is kind of a big range of what would be appropriate for Lynda. And the truth is, Lynda also has a private clientèle. She runs her own little side business, so she needs to be even more professional in a situation like that.
The fun fact though is that she works with children. So she is up, she is down, she is left, she is right. It's important to not only put together but have some mobility in her look.
First things first, we paired this entire look with a t-shirt. It's a very casual way of still being appropriate, but being comfortable. But again, my fun staple piece that I work her on, the pencil skirt, every women should own one. It looks good on most body type, so you should own one.
And then of course we've done a little bit of pop and a twist with this men's wear vest. A lot of people might think that vests are only for men, but right now men's wear is really big on women. And what I love about it is it's a little bit sexy, a little bit sassy, but it makes you very structured and appropriate.
Because the base of the outfit is all black, we have done a pop with this particular vest. We have actually kept it pretty simple down here. We have done a simple black heel. But what I love about this heel; turn to the side for me Lynda, is not only does it have a stacked heel, but it also has a platform. So it's very, very comfortable, so even though Lynda wants to be a little more formal with her high heel on, she can actually wear these for a long time. How do they feel?
Lynda: They are very comfortable.
Amy Salinger: These are the only high heels that I would wear walking around the city. I hate high heels, and these I can actually bear. Give a little bit of a pop with a white watch for summer, and just some simple jewelry going on, and Lynda is ready for work: chic, simple and comfortable.
Next up we have what I refer to as a suit separate, because you know those offices where you are like, well, I have to wear a suit to work everyday.
Number one, they overcharge you. Just by stamping the word suit on there, they automatically blow the price through the roof, because you need to own suits.
Number two, boring, they are usually cut way too big, way too boxy. Think separate. Think blazers, think pants, think skirts, and it's all about a mix and match, and doing fun pop pieces in between your basics of your suit.
And I have chosen this very silky yet simple top. It's a blouse by Club Monaco. The price point isn't too high, but because it's just a little pop coming through the suit, it's completely appropriate for an office.
Now, of course panning down here, we also have a fun flat shoe, specifically if you are running around in the office all day, you don't necessarily need to wear heels. This has a great little buckle on it, it's a gold pop, so that again, making it a little bit different, and it's just adding that touch of funk to your pretty basic suit, so you look appropriate in the office, but better than everybody else.
And of course we've added a simple gold ring, simple gold earrings, and in terms of styling, I decided to roll up the sleeve and scrunch it up a little. Gives a little bit more of a looser, easier accessible feel to Lynda, but if you are at a office that that's inappropriate, that's okay, roll your sleeves down. It's good either way, just a point of making yourself feel comfortable, and at the same time standing yourself apart from the crowd.
And of course Lynda has her big carryall. We can get a laptop in there, we can get lunch in there, because I am sorry it isn't cool to buy your lunch everyday in this economic status. So you get a bag that's appropriate, and you can look chic and office appropriate and yet stand apart from the crowd.
So our final outfit of this office chic episode, this is a sun dress. I want to make this perfectly. I want to show you how you can take a sun dress and make it into a casual Friday type of outfit, and that's what I would consider this to be is casual Friday. You are looking appropriate, but at the same time you can run right out to dinner and cocktails afterwards.
By pairing this simple dress with a cloaked cardigan, again, we have discussed this before, because this is an Empire waist dress, we want the cardigan to end about the same spot, so the middle of her is all in one line. And then of course, have fun with the jewelry. I purposely went with the 50s theme on the jewelry, doing this big gold brown necklace and the matching earrings, which I don't usually do, but together it really has a great Donna Reed effect, and it dresses up the whole look of this sun dress. Put the gold in the shoes, and given another pop color, the orange is a great offset to the blues in the dress.
So we have taken this simple dinner and drinks dress, and we have made it appropriate for a casual Friday.
