How to Save Money on Your Phone Bill
Audra Lowe: And, if you want to afford some of those hot toys, you got to have some money, right? You may want to consider some new ways of cutting costs. Jeanette Pavini has some tips to lower your phone bill in today’s Better Ways to Save.
Jeanette Pavini: Well, phone bills can take a big bite out of your budget but they don’t have to. It’s pretty easy to find basic phone plans for either your cell or landline that look like a good deal but it's the little extras that add up go in over your minutes, making international calls or making lots of costs to the people who use a different service provider can really add to the bill.
You can make free calls over your computer using a headset and free software from voice over IP providers like Skype. The downside to this service is you need to have a good internet connection or the quality of your calls maybe affected. Now, these services also allow you to call cell phones and land lines from your computer for a small monthly charge.
A growing number of companies are allowing you to talk free on all calls including international ones if you listen to an ad first. These services have you call a toll free number; you listen to an advertisement before being connected to your call. Now sometimes, there are limits to the length of time that you could talk without having your conversation interrupted by another ad.
You can also cut out fees for calling directory assistant by dialing a vast array of free 4-1-1 line. Again, you’ll have to listen to an ad before you get your number or address that you're looking for.
And finally, calling cards can be a good option if you're in an area without internet service. You can find cards that cost less than five cents a minute for overseas calls. Just make sure you don’t have to pay high connection fees as part of the service.
