Chris: Diane I know that from teaching at high school level, what I emphasize more than anything is ground ball, so that then your position in the game is more than anything and especially for the youth level. We have already talked about a little bit of how hard it to catch the ball. I am sure that the ball is on the ground 99% of the time. So, I am sure this is one first girls that you teach and just wanted to see what you do with the youth as far as how to get ground balls and what are the best techniques so that they can get low etcetera.
Diane: Chris, it's all true. The ball is on the ground in a lot of new sports and they need to be able to get there first and scoop it the first time. So we are going to teach with Moura here how to scoop the ball correctly, and again, it's a lot of the little minor things that make a difference with youth.
The first thing is how to hold the stick for scooping. I tell all my players this is the one and only time that you can put your hand at the very top of your stick. So Moura show them if you are going to go for ground ball. Turn your stick like you are going to for ground ball. Her hand, that V is at the very, very top of the stick. That gives them a lot more control. Pull your hand all the way back Moura. If you went to scoop a ball, how much control do you have on getting that versus if you put your hand up there. Do you think you control it better up here? Yeah, a lot better. So if she is going for ground ball, the first thing she is going to do is slide her hand up to top.
Second most important thing, can you tell me Moura about what I always say about get down? Why do we get down? Get our butts down? Right. We are going to get really low. What happens lean over and pretend you are going for a ground ball. If your butt is up, is that ball is going to roll. You can really demonstrate on here. It's just going roll away from them. So they need to get down. I am going to put a ground ball out and you are going to demonstrate. We are going to walk up so, because that's rolling.
We are going to walk up to it. So we are were going to do this in slow motion. We are going to scoop block, walk, walk, walk. She is going to plant her foot as close to that ball as possible. Go ahead Moura, bend all the way down, get that butt way down. There she goes. She is going to push through -- can you get away with -- it's little hard on this floor. You can do it a little faster now. Back up. That's what we are going to do. We are going to walk up, plant out foot as close as we can, get our butt down and scoop through. Go ahead and scoop through. Good job, Moura!
Now, Moura your hand with a little bit high on that. We don't want it that high. One of other things that coaches should be aware of that kids are constantly putting their hands up higher, their stick may be too long. Moura likes hers a little bit long, but we have to watch her hand. So if you are going along, let's demonstrate again. Come back Moura. We will do it real easy on here. I want you to go quickly, get really low right to the ground, and always scoops through. So that means moving the stick through in a fluid motion. Here we go. Go ahead all. Good! Good job Moura!
