Scribblenauts Genesis of the Idea Developer Diary
When I took the 12 days and have them merge them together and that’s where one of us came to be it’s like what if we have puzzles, but the way you solve them is anything you can think of, and it’s just like yeah, that’s awesome and so that’s where we started.
We have a lot of different names before Scribble Nauts. The original name was “Wordplay” which really lame and not fun and not visionary, but it’s like always we’ll draw the life with lots of class, we’ve always come through a lot of names before we settle on the filename and I think it was Jeff Luke who actually helped me with the idea, I think it was actually his idea, I’m not even sure like I don’t remember that was long ago, where we’re just doing on different ideas where point of the game at that point was you’re an astronaut and we we’re trying to help other words by creating things and solving puzzles and so there was —losing around and at that time it was already, there was no keywords, so it made a lot of sense like it was the only words that is going to come from ScribbleNauts and that’s kind of there is life because there’s action kind of scribbled stuff on paper and that would bring us to life.
So Jeff kind of have that idea, he said, you it isn’t about this, and I was, yeah you know what that kind of it’s quirking off, it you know nobody has ever had a name like that before and stuff, it was good.
ScribbleNauts is also actually a temp name which is was kind of funny that I actually stop because in the beginning we’re just like, well we need something, we realized we need something for a pitch and we realized what’s the project name. And so, they’re like, well this is quirky and interesting, but maybe not completely what we want to go for, but it just make sense and the last thing that wasn’t generic at all, that was really like—and it was really cool at that time, when we actually Googled Scribblenauts like there was like nothing, there is nothing, it was —links for the word Scribbleanauts, this is really big, so like every can easily recognize the game with the name which was exactly what you want to do with the product.
So ScribbleNauts is really, really special idea compared to other games they’ve had, the other idea is you know we’ve talked about the company because—I always hear people say that ideas are —and you know its like, that’s very true, but the great idea is very, very had to combine and I think ScrribleNauts is one of those ideas where it take kind of what was learned in the DS and what I’ve learned as a designer on the DS and in general, to the next level we had drawn the life where you can trust the things that really interesting, but ScribbleNauts just takes it to another level.
I mean, ScribbleNauts, the idea itself I mean taking the original writing idea and taking the puzzle idea, that’s the puzzle level, I mean that was a four month stand, that took a long time to do, just sitting there and going over ideas and we’re going over ideas and talking to other people and other designers and feel the company and say what you think about this and I mean we go through a lot of ideas to come to the right idea. Its not easy for me specially to come up something like this, it takes a lot of pushing and prying and lot of late nights just thinking of where to I can go with this and how can that be different and unique, its not just like oh yeah you cant just come up with this on Saturday, you know do ten of this a week, its not like that at all.
I do have a couple of ideas and a lot of other people designers or other company also do, but for us to choose the product that we want to do, that takes a lot of time.
Coming from —I do a lot of research, I go on the web and look at other games on what they’re doing and play a ton of games and I look a lot of different movies and all kind of different mediums. You know what’s popular and what’s the new thing and why is it popular and what’s so great about it. And I also look at the market leaders, I said before that I was thinking about an idea, for our next DS idea before ScribbleNauts is looking well what’s being on the DS, why they turned out this big and green age is big and —is big. I said, well how do we do that without copying at all, so its not what it sounds, we don’t copy things, but like how do we get to those markets, those demographics and still have the game, will demographic still like the game such as —its very casual, but we definitely like it a lot, and so it took a long time to kind of come up with that and put all the information together and come up with ScribbleNauts.
