Shelly: Hi! I'm Shelly from Taylorsville, Utah. And I suffer from itchy, watery eyes, and the lot of sneezing and a runny nose. I think it might be caused by seasonal allergies, so I'm just wondering what my options might be.
Prianka Kapur: Well, Shelly, I think that's a great question. Seasonal allergies actually affect a lot of people in the United States and depending on what part of the country you're are from, there are various different allergens that can sort of cause problems.
The most common ones generally tend to me are tree pollens, ragweed pollens, grass pollens, those are the things that tend to be in the environment. Then you've got stuff that's generally -- that could be in your environment and home things like cockroach, mice; things that you might not think about being allergic to. So what can happen is they can cause all these various symptoms like itchy, watery eyes, like you had mentioned before.
The treatment we would generally be using an antihistamine, that's something that you can take by mouth. It's basically like an allergy pill to help prevent sort of the symptoms that you've been having.
Other options include nasal sprays where you would just puff the nasal spray into your nose, once or twice a day and that can help with local symptoms. They have eye drops also that can help with allergies. So those are some of the medical options that you can use.
Allergists also tend to offer the option of doing allergy shots which is basically like giving you very, very small doses of what you might be allergic to gradually over time so that you build up tolerance.
