So let’s talk about some history when it comes to podcasting and we’ll first go and get those whole series kicked off. It’s important for us to know where we came from and how we got here so that can help us with the genre and the medium that we’ll be participating in.
Before podcasting, audio was still available on the internet. Now, audio internet itself on the internet is very simple. It’s just a file that people can listen to. In the case of video, or just a file that people can watch and listen too. There has been plenty of companies before broadcasting was hot that had been working very hard to develop ways for us to consume content audio and video interactive on the web.
Broqadcast.com was one of those companies that spent a lot of time and money playing together the technology so that they could deliver content on the web. What we typically going back in those days when we true to look at live content was that the technology was a little ahead of its time. A lot of cases was banned with when it get allows to keep up. a lot of cases streaming technology within file formats still in quite worked away that we expected it too but that didn’t keep people from still working on a solution and trying to put together a solution for us to be ale to enjoy the content that we are consuming without having to think about the technology being worried that something would skip or that would lose connectivity somewhere along the way.
So we’ve already got the technology established. People like 18 tee and com cast in the telecommunications company. Put in bigger pipes so that we could easily watch the content and opt you concerned about flatting or lines with the too many bits and bites that they could handle but we came up with an issue after those were resolved. The new issue is how do we make this easy for the average user? So let’s get into some of the focus that looked in solve that there was a need that need to be filled in order to deliver content easily for focus on the web. So to again, again we didn’t have to think about the technology. We just enjoy the content.
Tristan Louise back in October of 2000, proposed the concept of making tact for enclosures or files within an XML file. At that point in time, we still, actually still call these XML files that we use to deliver content or SS feeds or which is an acronym for really simple syndication.
His concept the was taken by gentlemen named Dave Winer with an expanded upon it and implement to do a little bit differently, little bit more effective way than what Tristan Louise had recommended. Winer at that point in time then had a discussion with a gentleman named Adam Curry who was a former video disc jockey for music television and TV and the reason why he brought this concept Adam Curry was because Adam Curry was plying around with the idea of what he was calling audio blogging or taking the concept of a daily diary on the internet and expanding that to audio so that people could not only type and communicate in a diary on the web the attacks what they could do it through audio as well.
Skip forward a few months to January 2001, and we have Dave Winer then still looking in to this technology and he actually took then NP of our way file of our grateful dead song and he deployed it to as XML file on the web through his RSS fee, this doesn’t seem like a big deal but this was huge because there was a proof of concept that show that Winer developed the technology that will allow him to distribute content through the we that was very easy for the consumers to then take up on their own machines and view or listen too.
