I just paid a plumber to fix this smell, thinking it was a sewer issue. He snaked it, put a new showerhead on, checked the vent in the attic and I could still smell the odor but not as strong. This video makes perfect sense and I am going to try it today. My shower is fiberglass but I think the same principal applies. Thanks!

I have come to the conclusion, after many hour spent on this problem that the organic matter is sticking to the wall of the p-trap and causing the water to stagnate in the p-trap itself. I thought the same thing you did about the mud pan. I eliminated that by blocking the pipe below the mudpan and no smell came from the shower. I removed the blockage and the smell immediately returned. I took a sample of the water from the trap and the smell was bad. I jetted the p-trap and the smell is gone.
