Shalom! This video is about the history of lighting candle on Shabbat. There is nothing in the Torah about lighting candles on Shabbat. The proverbs tell us that the candle that we light is like the soul of the man to God. So, candles have been very significant. Obvious of used candles light a lot things and the Rabbi’s, 2000 years ago, said that lighting candles on Shabbat is one of the things that we mean must do.
But was not viewed as myths really until Arashi said that is a commentary on the Talmud track dates Shabbat, he said; By exerting the means vote of candling a lamps in Shabbat on Hanukah, one brings a light of Torah into the world.
Now, the mid rash we have been stories said that one of the reasons that was giving to women is kind of a Tikkoh in a repair for the sanity of brought into the world by urging Adam to eat from the tree that they were not suppose to eat from. Any case, it does not seem to be really the force of the Mitzvot until 1900 years ago. But even then, Munrashi established as it is mitzvah. It was accepted by Jewish world, the Ashkenazik world, it did know what Abraka to say.
In fact, medieval spartic women light Shabbat lamps without any blessing at all. But during the term 11th century, Ashkenazik women are already had started to fulfill some of the Mitzvot that man were fulfilling such blowing the chuffer we are fulfilling did see. According to maps or V three which is the companion of laws and customs that collected by Rashi’s students. Women took upon themselves these commandments and recites the blessings as well. The same way today that we have knew rituals for Jewish women like by Mitzvah and women are becoming Rabbi’s in canters.
Okay, so Rashi accepts the candling of Shabbat candles as a mitzvah for women. So, that means, seems logical that if woman are reciting blessings for commandments that were taking upon themselves that previously had been for men, something that women that always done lighting Shabbat candles there should be a blessing. So, and Rashi’s grandson, obeyed all time declared that lighting the Shabbat lamps require blessings.
So, what blessing? Well, this is the case were we borrow the blessings from Hanukkah? A Hanukkah blessing was already established (words are spoken in Jewish) so, simply substituted the phrase (words are spoken in Jewish) blessed are you. Oh, lord our god, who is king of the universe, who sanctifies us by your commandments. To commanded us to kindle the candles for Hanukkah and just simply substitute the world for Shabbat
So, the Hanukkah blessing is actually thousand years older than the Shabbat blessing and we know this because Rashi’s is granddaughter, Hannah, describe the ritual that her mother perform that Rashi’s daughter perform, explained in Rashi’s house the women first lit the Shabbat lamps then recite benediction and the worlds she explains there the same ones that we use today. And Rabino Tom’s decision and his sister Hannah response psalm was so authoritative that within the hundred years after them, even women in the spartic world were saying it is blessing.
So, today, we now think that Moses is life light candle and said the blessing at Sinai obviously, not true. But it is certainly one of the basic rituals and laws of Judaism. Tired to imagine the Jewish life without Shabbat candles. In the fact, that about a quarter of Jewish household helps Shabbat candles lit on Friday night. Things are very sad thing. Now, I know in orthodox Rabbi we will not tell you this, but I think even if you want to go out afterwards. At least light Shabbat candles, be careful if you have car otherwise light Shabbat candles, if you have a cat put it on sink where the cat can not cause to much damage. But at least, it creates the Shabbat atmosphere, and then, if you already have Shabbat candle, what is the big problem of getting some grape juice or Croatia wine, and the Hallel, and making Shabbat, and if you doing that, so stay home you have Shabbat dinner. Go to services and have a Shabbat dinner, make Shabbat.
One of the saddest thing I think in terms of Jewish lives was when I asked my 10th graders. How many of you have a any evidence in your home between Sun down Friday and Saturday night that in the Shabbat and there are not there many have. Shabbat is Hannuham a secular Jews said “more than the Jews have kept Shabbat, Shabbat was kept the Jews”. And one of the ideas Rabbi’s that was every Jew keep Shabbat the Messiah will come. So, lets start with at least fulfilling the Israel of Shabbat is a whole remember by having candles in Kiddush and Hallel at Friday night and make me Shabbat dinner. It sanctify Shabbat in that way.
Now, strictly speaking ,Shabbat candles should be lit 18 minutes before sunset, you final on sunset is on the Friday. She light candles 18 minutes before. My view is whatever your time you should light candles about is best to do it at the proper time. And 18 minutes before sunset was because we think that is how long it took the average Roman. was standard the matter time in walk a mile. So you have little fence surround than Shabbat is. Because the Torah does not really tell us when Shabbat starts it simply says in this evening and going to this morning. So we now is around evening, so was the early is continues than that is all it could be dark and that is only ended on Saturday night. Hope this helps, a loose a day, little bit about the Shabbat to us.
