Shady Grove on Dobro in DADGAD Tuning
Hi, welcome to lessonswithTroy.com I’m Troy Brenningmeyer, well today we’ll learning shady grove in a different tuning that I’ve ever used. It’s called DADGAD tuning, it’s really similar to open D tune in except for one note. Your 3rd string here you’re going to leave as a G so the tuning that you have is actually the words DADGAD, its D A D and then G A D and that’s a D 4 cord so it’s really good for shady grove because shady grove has D minor cord. It’s more of a modal tune right that means you have F natural and they’re account for that D minor cord, so you really don’t want an F sharp you know that would normally be an F sharp this 3rd string. You don’t want that when you’re playing this tune because that would sound like a D major cord you really want that D minor sound so this G, this G note here really gives you a nice you know weird kind of suspended sound.
Once again that tune in is D A D G A D, okay let’s go and get started with the first phrase. Okay so our first phrase here is going to start right on the down beat of measure 1 and we’re going to play measures 1 and 2 it’s going to sound like this play it slowly. 1 2 3 4, okay play that again, okay, so what I’m doing there in measure 1, okay there’s first little part and your going to play your 6th string and your 5th string open then your going to hammer on in your 3rd fret 5th string just like that then your going to play your open 6th string open 4th string. That’s a first beat of that measure, just like that, okay real close attention to the right hand finger into—that’ll help you. I’ll show you the right hand in just a second, okay so after you play that and then play another open 6th string to your open 1st string okay. Now we have this that’s just 3 2 0 it’s 3 slide down to 2 pull up to zero that’s all in your 4th string and then 3rd fret 5th string.
Then a really quick open 6th string open 4th string and that’s the whole measure there. Okay, so once you going to whole measure, that’s a measure 1 2 3 4, 1 2 3 4, okay and then moving on to measure 2 you’ve got this. Okay, same thing, pinch your 6th string and 5th string and hammer on 3rd fret 5th string and then play open 6th string to open 4th string, okay then after you play an open 4th string you going to hammer on to your 3rd fret 4th string to an open 3rd string. Okay and then you’re going to do a triple stop here on your 6th 5th and 4th string and you’re going to slide from your 5th fret up to your 7th fret. Okay now we do just a nice 4 rolls starting with our 1st string, so 1st string open and then 7th fret 4th string open 3rd string open 1st string back to my 7th fret 4th string. And that’s using that open G string which gives that nice sus sound, great that’s a nice sound too.
So both those measures together sound like this, 2 3 4, okay let’s check out the right hand. Okay, so here’s the right hand from measures 1 and 2 now as you can see I’m using a different microphone in this lesson and I am extremely happy with this microphone. It’s fairly inexpensive and it’s, it’s Audio Technical Artist Elite it’s called I think it’s an AE5100 if you guys are looking for a nice dobra mic out there but I’m really happy with it and I’ve just got right over my sound hole here and guess a real nice bassy sound for you know without playing. Best playing with the band I might move a back a little bit to get some highs but for right now I get some—I have a black thing you see that it’s kind of great, great sound really picks up the highs and really picks up the lows too and it’s a—it’s a condenser microphone a laree diaphragm condenser mic in actually a small casing so you know if you guys got the money check that out that’s a really cool microphone and I think they go for around 245 or something like that. You might be able to find one used, so good that’s why I live with this and found it used okay so here’s the right hand for this one let’s just check it out measure by measure first measure okay you want to start of with your thumb and index, so let’s do that pinch and thumb middle thumb middle just like that. Now we’ve got just middle index and then a quick thumb the middle it’s that full measure slowly looks like this. See that pinch with index and thumb, thumb, middle, thumb, middle and then middle finger again index. Okay and then the 2nd measure looks like this, it’s that same pinch with thumb and index, thumb, middle, middle and then do that grip. Pinch with all 3 in there then this 4th roll. Start off your middle finger on your 1st string, thumb, index, middle, so that measures slowly looks like this okay let’s go and move on to the next phrase.
