You have made yourself a nice lather and you are nailing down your shaving technique pretty well. But things still aren't quite coming together. Maybe you are not spending enough time with your pre-shaved preparation. There are a number of ways to take out some pre-shave insurance including washes, oils and protectives, including some products that might be in you bathroom cabinet right now.
Your local chemist, grocery store or drug store, probably carries a fair selection of face washes for men, some specifically labeled as pre-shaved products. Proraso's Pre-shave is sort of a multitasker. You can either leave it on and lather over it or rinse it off and you can use it after the shave as well as a post shave soother.
The shower is a really good time to prepare your beard too, at least run some hot water over your beard area while you are showering, it will hydrate it real nice and get it ready for the shaving. There is one other thing we can do, applying old hair conditioner. You use in on top of you hair, why not in your beard too, just rub some on get the top of your shower and rinse it off when you are finished. When you are drying off from your shower, don't dry your beard area.
Some companies that produce traditional shaving products are also introducing shaving brush friendly pre-shave oils, designed to provide a little extra lubrication in beards softening. Some traditional shavers also use specific shave oil, although it's designed to be used by itself, some traditional shavers have found it to be very effective under shaving lather as well. Finally, there are products such as Trumper's Skin Food, although marketed as a post shave bomb, it's ingredients can be used as a pre-shave as well to give an additional level of protection from a razor's irritation.
Corn Huskers has almost the same ingredients, but it doesn't smell nearly as good.
