Shi Bhig Shi Mhor Taught by Pierre Bensusan
There is a very famous traditional Irish tune which I’m sure you’ve heard of already. It’s called Shi Bhig Shi Mhor. I know this tune from plenty, one of my favorite all time Irish bands and they perform it I think very slowly but as a waltz, a slow waltz and I would like to perform it for you now in a free form with no rhythm. Just melody exposed like this, just stranded in the air.
There are many ways to look at a piece, one way is to play the piece as you’ve heard it before, as you know its played but to me in my mind this piece was so free, so peaceful, so quite. I felt like I had to take time to even slow the process even more to put some variations of my own there you know so its like taking the traditional piece and recreate it somehow and of course in that process you do not want to betray the tune. The tune has always to be there, it has to keep its personality and everything. Basically you don’t want to interfere with that, you just give the piece a different angle, a light angle and a different vision of it you know. For instance when I heard this, it was like this.
You know more or less of course and then I feel like it’s too fast, it’s too fast to be able to put element which are more personal, more related to your own story right, so let’s now use a split screen and play a little bit of this piece and even slower if it’s possible.
