Kevin McCormally: I am Kevin McCormally of Kiplinger's. I am here with Bob Frick, Senior Editor of Kiplinger's Personal Finance Magazine, to talk about Life Insurance. Bob, I understand you have a personal experience shopping for a life insurance recently and have a pretty good story to tell.
Bob Frick: Well, yeah. A year ago, a couple of people died in my family and ironically, we didn't pay our bills for a couple of months because we were just caught up in the confusion. So, one of the bills we didn't pay was my life insurance premiums. So, my policy lapse.
Kevin McCormally: So, that you put in the market real quick.
Bob Frick: Exactly. I had to start from scratch and the amazing thing was I hadn't shopped in so long and I was paying way too much for my insurance.
Kevin McCormally: Oh! What did you find when you went to the marketplace?
Bob Frick: Well, I was paying a single-year term insurance which means every year the premium was going up. What I really needed to have was a level-term policy and in getting one of those, I got a ten-year policy, my premiums are way down.
Kevin McCormally: So, what were you paying before and what are you paying now?
Bob Frick: I was paying more than $300 for a $100,000 coverage before and now, it's only about $200.
Kevin McCormally: Oh! It's $200 and because it's ten-year policy, of course, you are going to be paying them $200 a year ten years from now.
Bob Frick: Right, exactly and hopefully, ten years from now, my investments will have grown so I won't need insurance anymore.
Kevin McCormally: Well, okay. Other people in your shoes or anybody, who has not shop for insurance lately, how can they shop for a better policy?
Bob Frick: Well, you need to go online. It's very simple; you look at insure.com or accuquote.com, just put in some of your basic information and they will give you a lot of comparison quotes and you can just choose the best one.
Kevin McCormally: I hope that other people can save as much money as you do.
Bob Frick: Well, you have to be healthy; you know, not good. Luckily, I am not in that category. If you are not, you are going to be paying more.
Kevin McCormally: Okay, thank you, Bob.
